FIFA 10 Preview

Virtual Pro, the Practice Arena, and improved gameplay lead the charge for this year's version of FIFA.

Last year's Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of FIFA was received well by both critics and consumers. With FIFA 10, EA Sports is seeking to improve the previous game by refining the gameplay, revamping the Manager Mode, and adding new gameplay modes, such as the Pro Club Championship and the Practice Arena.

You can create a character, dubbed a Virtual Pro, using Photo Game Face, which works in conjunction with a compatible camera. Then, you can take your Virtual Pro through any game mode and try to accomplish more than 200 goals. Virtual Pros can even be taken online in the new Pro Club Championship, where created characters join clubs and compete in 10 vs. 10 matches for Regional and World Championships.

The new Practice Arena should be useful to both old and new players as it allows them to improve their game in a controllable environment. They can set up any gameplay situation, and also have as many players on the field as they want. The icing on the cake: you can create your own plays for use in real games. So you could design the ultimate corner kick attack, and then have your team perform it online with the press of a button.

For the first time ever, FIFA will have a true 360 degree dribbling system that, alongside the new animation technology and improved AI, gives players more control over the ball. The new AI also extends to goalkeepers, who are reportedly more responsive this time around. Slide tackle targeting has also been improved, giving defenders a bit of a leg up.

The Manager Mode boasts over 50 major improvements that make the experience more authentic. Match results, player transfers, and player development are all more realistic this time around.

FIFA 10 is set to come out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 2 in Europe and October 20 in North America. It will retail for $59.99.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Review

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an entry in the Metroid Prime series - 18 years, in fact. It was 8 years ago that Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced and its development was more than a little turbulent. Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
