Star Fox 64 3D Hands On Preview

StarFox 64 is back! In 3DS port form.

There's not all that much to say about StarFox 64 3DS. Believe it or not, in this case, it's exactly what one would expect it to be.

In our demo, the Arwing, itself, could not take damage for demo purposes, but wings definitely could, just like the classic game, losing players twin laser power-ups. Again, just like the original game, Falco was harassed by enemy ships at some point. Bombs worked exactly like I was used to, and so did the brake and the gas. Somersaults and U-turns were mapped to the D-pad, which was a little confusing in the short time we were there, but probably won't be a problem in the long-run. Like before, gold rings, laser power-ups, and the hit counter were all still present.

What was different? The artwork, every model, and all the textures seemed to have been re-created from the ground-up. The boss from the "Mission Complete" path of the stage looked fantastic, but clearly had a very touched-up design. The demo ended before I could fight him for very long, but I'm pretty sure I was able to target specific parts of his body, just like the original game. Charged shots also are the same: To fire a charges shot, after looking on, one must tap the fire button once more. It's possible charged shots don't have quite as large an area of effect.

Really, if you like StarFox 64, you'll love it in 3D on the 3DS, and that's about all there is to say about it.

And if you want a new Star Fox, you had better hope this sells, and perhaps they will make one.

Well, I've just found out that the 3DS ports of the N64 games are supposed to have new content beyond the original N64 games.

Did they have new voice actors, or did they keep the original audio??

I couldn't bear to hear "Do a barrel roll!" any differently.

They didn't have any voices in the game at all. The scenes where you'd normally hear audio were fast-forwarded. I'd guess they haven't decided what they want to do about voices yet, so they just excluded it from the demo.

You always had to hit fire again... At least in the n64 version you did.

Really? It's been too long since I've played StarFox 64, and I haven't been able to go home to compare directly. Thanks, my apologies for the inaccuracy. I'm editing it out.
