Ys Seven Hands On Preview
The latest in the Ys series continues to improve the formula set in place many years ago.
Ys Seven is the first game developed specifically for the PSP by original developer Nihon Falcom. The team is continuing much of the progress they have made in the series by adding onto everything established in Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim.
Players again take control of Adol Christin as well as a party of two other characters who all appear on the map simultaneously. Players can control any of the three at any given time, but when not controlled by the player they are autonomous and from my experience, pretty effective.
Unlike the original two titles in the series, swordplay this time around is much more like Ys VI. Players can jump and attack with a push of a button. Additionally, charge moves are available as well as special skills which can be leveled up through use.
Other interesting mechanics are available via the use of items in the game. One item shown during the demo gave the party the ability to ride a wind tunnel through the air. Apparently a variety of these items exist, allowing players to do a wide array of things to progress in the game.
My play experience revealed a very smooth title, that also looked very good in motion. The controls, framerate and mechanics all were top notch. While using the ability to ride the wind, I was simultaneously flying between platforms and fighting off enemies while avoiding powerful fan blades. It was very exciting and fun, showing some great promise for the game as a whole.
Ys Seven is poised to be a very enjoyable RPG experience that I'm told is about 30-40 hours long. We'll see how it plays out, but consider me excited for the final release.
