These games aren't very good, but we love 'em!
It’s the last standard episode of Nerds Without Pants for 2019, and boy do we have a hum dinger for you? Wait, “hum dinger”? Why am I typing like a kid growing up in 1947? Gee, willikers, this show sure is swell! Golly, it’s just the bee’s knees! Yeah, ok boomer.
A run-of-the-mill point-and-click adventure.
I'm not too familiar with the point-and-click genre, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I recieved a review code for My Brother Rabbit. From what I do know, having played through the excellent Tormentum: Dark Sorrow and about an hour or so of Double Fine's Broken Age, I doubt My Brother Rabbit is breaking new ground, but it has some cool features. Friends don't let friends fight evil alone.
In a land of menacing hot dogs and monster wildlife, a young boy is tasked with a great quest to save his Papa. This concept of a dangerous journey and humbly accepting a noble enterprise to save a loved one is not new to video games. The Adventure Pals, however, takes on a unique perspective to this theme by weaving in characters and scenes that keep you moving quickly through an exciting world.
A game about busy work.
Car Quest is one of those weird experiences that isn’t particularly fun or engaging, but can tap into your OCD tendencies and keep you playing even when you’d rather not. Its design is rather mundane - you drive around a world collecting an artifact at a time, which opens up a new area of the map where you’ll collect a new artifact, which will in turn open a new area of that map where you’ll collect… well, you get the point. This cycle is only broken on occasion where you’ll gain access to a portal that requires a certain number of batteries to get into. In the portal you’ll do more of what you do in the main world, just on a smaller scale, until you earn an artifact to use back in the main world, where the cycle continues.
If it wasn't for its heart and soul, you might just be annoyed to death.
I’ve had some trouble sticking with Flipping Death. In between playing other games for review I slowly chipped away at it, making small progress over a pretty extended period of time. On the surface, I really love what it’s going for. This platforming-adventure has a great sense of humor, memorable characters, and a really neat and unique art style that absolutely leaves an impression. While all of the accoutrement is fantastic, solving puzzles and accomplishing tasks feels pretty consistently obtuse and rarely satisfying when you finally figure it all out.
Three fourths epic.
When I reviewed Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, I elected to tell a personal story of my journey through the game in lieu of a traditional review, since it best represented the strengths of that title. As I was playing through its sequel, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, I wanted to do the same thing. Unfortunately, there are enough complexities with this release that story time will have to wait for another feature. Shadow of War is simultaneously the most fun I’ve had all year and one of my disappointments for 2017.
2016: bad for mankind, great for video games.
