Making a game with no puzzles, no combat, and no action to speak of in order to tell a specific and carefully crafted story seems like such a simple idea, and one that could easily turn out to be pretty boring. Luckily, the creators of Gone Home have been paying close attention to the powerful little vignettes stuck in the cracks of other games that have come before. It’s the little notes left in Skyrim’s caves and the journal entries in Myst that paved the way for Gone Home to turn those little nuggets into a pretty amazing story.

Digitally distributed game sales have continued to blossom on Xbox Live Arcade according to analyst firm FADE. In 2011, sales of games on XBLA increased 18% over the previous year, with From Dust bringing in the most money. Fruit Ninja Kinect had the best showing for a Kinect game, ranking third in the number of copies sold.

Whether due to hardware limitations or a reputation for simpler fare, the Wii hasn't seen much of the sandbox/open world genre. Considering the drop in horsepower and the inability to implement the “switch to any car, any time” gameplay, I'm surprised Ubisoft bothered making this Wii version at all. Still, effort was clearly spent in building this version from the ground up -- it uses the pointer controls for shooting (which is very handy), and it's got DS connectivity (remember this feature, Nintendo?). It does a decent job creating a large San Francisco-looking city to drive around in, free of load times. However, too many bad ideas and cut corners make it all seem pretty average.
