Mutant Mudds Review

Throw Mario, Mega Man, Firebrand, and Samus into a blender and...

It’s rare that I can use the word “charming” to describe a game, and rarer still when I play a game that puts a steady smile on my face. Somehow in the chase for realistic polygon models, normal mapping, and Euphoria physics engines we lost a little bit of that magic that got us into gaming in the first place. That’s where Mutant Mudds comes into the picture—a game that may play on my nostalgia for the 8- and 16-bit days of gaming, but does so with skill and style.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled Review Rewind

This is the one with Pizza Monsters...

When I was young, there was a pizza place near where I lived that had a bunch of arcade machines. Despite the presence of classics like Killer Instinct 2 and a 6-player X-Men cabinet, I always gravitated toward a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time cabinet. Flash forward to a few years ago and I found myself clocking hours with friends via a MAME emulator on my computer. Our first choice? None other than Turtles in Time. Needless to say, as far as beat-'em-ups go, it was always one of the best, standing shoulder to shoulder with both The Simpsons Arcade and X-Men.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack Review

While only a downloadable title, this is one of the best of the Vita launch.

It's true; I'm in love with Drinkbox Studios' latest effort and PlayStation Vita launch title, Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack. I wish I could point to one individual aspect of the game and say, "that's it, that's why I love this game," but it's not that simple. The aggregation of varied and engaging gameplay, thoughtful puzzles, charm, humor, and even some well-placed Vita-specific features make this game a voyage that every Vita owner should not miss.

Mutant Mudds Review

I think the 12-bit generation must've been one of the best.

Faux retro games are all the rage these days. Capturing the look, sounds, and feeling of the gaming days of yore has proved to be a successful formula for most of the companies that have tried it. Renegade Kid has given the subgenre a shot with their latest title, Mutant Mudds, to great success. Instead of modeling itself after the most popular NES games, it creates its own identity that merges ideas from all past generations and systems – even the Virtual Boy. This mash up of ideas comes together in a spectacular way, making it one of the best titles available today on the 3DS.

Mutant Mudds Preview

Classic action-platforming with a 3D twist.

While not many have had the opportunity to play the Virtual Boy, Renegade Kid’s latest work is oddly reminiscent of Nintendo’s misfit system. Back when the Virtual Boy launched, it touted its special 3D capabilities; these boiled down to little more than multiple viewing planes, which gave the illusion of 3D. The most memorable games used these multiple planes to create deeper platforming experiences. Taking a cue from these experiences, Mutant Mudds allows players to jump between the current plane, background, and foreground.

NFL Blitz Interview with Producer David Ross

Though Midway is gone, Blitz has made a triumphant return thanks to EA. Click through to get the scoop on EA's Mutant League throwback, league violence, and some of the team's favorite cheats.

After nearly a decade, the NFL license has returned to the Blitz series. With Midway dead and buried, EA has acquired the rights to the fan favorite arcade football series with the intent of returning it to its former glory. After a successful outing with the NBA Jam series, it's clear EA has what it takes to properly rekindle these arcade experiences despite their simulation focused pedigree. PixlBit had an opportunity to interview the game's producer, David Ross, about the development of the game, working with the NFL license, and preserving the classic experience.
