Final Fantasy XIII-2 Hands On Preview

The direct follow-up to Final Fantasy XIII also made an appearance at the Sony press conference.

We all know that Final Fantasy XIII was more of a linear experience - a trait that many long time fans of the series took issue with. While the game offered amazing graphics and a unique approach to the traditional RPG gameplay, for many it still left something to be desired. It was clear based on the brief demo I played, that XIII-2 would not follow that same linear structure. The world I encountered when I finally got to play the game was much more open, and perhaps contained more possibilities. I can't stress enough how much of an improvement this will be over the previous title if it manages to offer the same gameplay throughout the entire quest.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together Review

While a remake, this solid tactics game is one that fans of the genre shouldn't miss.

Tactics Ogre is what you might call a “Tactics RPG.” This means that it’s like an RPG in every way except that battles occur on a pseudo-3D grid. If you’ve ever played Final Fantasy Tactics you’ll know what to expect. I’ve even seen an ad for Tactics Ogre that explicitly said “from the creators of Final Fantasy Tactics.” It’s practically a sequel. Right off the bat I can tell you that if you like that game, you’re definitely going to like this one.

Dissidia 012 [duodecim] Final Fantasy Review

Advent Children: The Game (feat. Kefka)

Dissidia 012, as you probably already know, is an RPG/fighting hybrid which pits characters from various Final Fantasy titles against each other. The deities Cosmos and Chaos have summoned all the greatest heroes and villains from the series to fight as their own personal armies, and the characters’ memories have been erased, so they don’t remember anything about their origins. It’s kind of depressing, actually.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light Review

A beautiful celebration of the classic, old-school RPG.

Final Fantasy is one of gaming's longest-running and most prestigious series. It started humbly as the expected swan song for sinking Japanese game developer Square Soft, but its surprising success has made the series and its developer a forerunner in the gaming world. These days Final Fantasy seems to be caught up in its own limelight. The 4 Heroes of Light takes the now bloated and flashy cut scenes and increasingly complex gameplay formula and shakes it back down to its core. What stands in its place is a celebration of the series' roots.

Final Fantasy XIII Review

Massive changes to the formula have been made, most of which will alienate the die-hard fans of the series.

Final Fantasy XIII is an absolutely intriguing game. I say this because it has made some of the most radical changes I have ever seen in an RPG, especially for the by-the-book Final Fantasy series. In my opinion, these changes are absolutely phenomenal; boiling RPGs down to their essence and refining the remaining bits into a single coherent experience. JRPG and Final Fantasy fans are likely to be outraged at the massive overall seen here.
