Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II Review

Is Tails the foil that accomplishes what Episode 1 couldn't, bringing Sonic back to his former splendor?

When Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I was released in 2010, it was meant to be a return to form for the blue blur, taking inspiration from the original Genesis titles. The results were mixed. So Sega went back to the drawing board for the next episode and fixed a few of the problems plaguing the first game. Although Ep. II evokes some of Sonic's previous glory, Sega still hasn't been able to fully capture the magic of the Genesis games, apparently content with yet another platformer that is only slightly above average in nearly every respect.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II Preview

Yes, Tails is in this game and no, he doesn't talk.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a sketchy period for some time now. Many would say that titles released this generation have been mediocre at best, with only Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations recently being exceptions. If you want to enjoy a good Sonic game, the majority of fans would point you back to the early 90s when Sonic stood toe to toe with Mario with titles like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic & Knuckles.

Community, Not Publisher, Funds Double Fine Adventure

The next game out of Double Fine Productions will be entirely funded by community pledges.

Sometimes miraculous things happen in the video game community.  Double Fine Productions, creators of cult favorite games like Psychonauts, Costume Quest and most recently Double Fine Happy Action Theater wants to return to their roots and produce a simple “point-and-click” adventure game that they are aptly calling Double Fine Adventure.  Usually a developer would have to rely on a publisher, investors or bank loans to bankroll such a production, but Double Fine has instead decided to reach out to the community to fund the game.

SoulCalibur V Review

On the stage of history SoulCalibur V takes two steps forward then one step back.

SoulCalibur has long held a special place in the hearts of fighting game fans.  The combination of weapon based combat combined with exaggerated, yet memorable characters was a welcome change of pace from the Tekkens and Virtua Fighters of the day.  While never accused of being the deepest of fighting games, its trademark accessibility assured that both the core and casual fighting fans could enjoy their time in the ring.

Sonic CD Review

You know you want to hear “Sonic Boom” again.

I love Sonic the Hedgehog. That is probably the understatement of the year, as I’ve made my love of the blue hedgehog well known and I know all of the Sonic games front to back. Well, most of them anyway. I didn’t own a Sega CD back in the day so one of the exceptions is Sonic CD. Since its initial release in 1993, diehard fans have sworn by the game’s quality, going so far as to call it the greatest Sonic game ever. Two ports have been released on the PC and as part of the Sonic Gems Collection on the GameCube, but this latest port is the most attractive release of the title. Does it still hold up 18 years later?
