Thorium Wars: Attack of the Skyfighter Review

It ain't no Star Fox, that's for sure.

Upon initially investigating the Thorium Wars sequel, I found myself quite excited by what was on display in the eShop teasers. It appeared to take inspiration from both Rogue Squadron and Star Fox; two series I have much adoration for. Unfortunately, after taking it for a spin it doesn’t even come close to matching its source inspiration.

Sony Declares War

Fire up the blogs, forums, and comments, people--the Console Wars are back!

On February 20th, Sony unleashed the opening volley in what could very well be the next generation of the fabled Console Wars with the introduction of the PlayStation 4. The message was clear: “We messed up with the PS3 and let our ego get the better of us. But we’re learning from our mistakes, and we’re taking the fight to our competitors.” From the opening song “Monster Hospital” by Metric to the strategic use of classic PlayStation cues for speakers at the conference, it seems like Sony is embracing the now storied history of the PlayStation brand and is ready for a hell of a battle with Microsoft and Nintendo.

Happy Wars Review

Happy happy joy joy, happy happy joy joy...

One of the things to come out of the last 6 years or so that I’ve found most interesting has been the rise of the free to play model. It wasn’t too long ago that free to play was synonymous with amateur game design and simple flash games. Now, even the biggest companies in the world are creating games that don’t ask for money up front, and the quality of those games has increased many times over. Console manufacturers have been slow to adopt this business model, so I was very interested in playing Happy Wars for XBLA, the first free to play game for the 360. While I don’t think that Happy Wars is a great example of the free to play structure, it stands as a unique and fun experience for Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Guild Wars 2 First Impressions

An MMORPG nomad might've found a home.

The last MMORPG to which I dedicated myself was Final Fantasy XI, which I played for about four years before I finally quit. Although my excitement for the game would eventually fade, my desire to be part of a persistent digital world continued. I attempted to scratch the itch by trying almost every other major option available: World of Warcraft, Aion, Final Fantasy XIV, Star Wars: The Old Republic, TERA, Lord of the Rings Online, and even the bite-sized iOS game Order and Chaos. I found limited success with FFXIV mostly because my wife plays, and TERA got my attention for its stylish combat. But ultimately, the search continues, and I’ve decided to give Guild Wars 2 a shot.
