Star Wars: The Old Republic is BioWare/EA’s attempt to overthrow the current MMO giant, World of Warcraft. As a person with minimal exposure to MMOs I can honestly say that I would rather wield a lightsaber than a regular ole’ sword any day. That said, I decided to venture out to BioWare and Gamer Grub’s Best Buy Star Wars: The Old Republic release event in Union Square in Manhattan on a chilly Monday night. You want a Star Wars MMO with lots of story and customizable Jedi? Then so be it.

MMOs in general have been fun for me, but none draw me in because of the overall lack of story and motivation. Yes, leveling up and questing is fun but for me, I like to have narrative in my experience. Because of this, Star Wars: The Old Republic has been on my personal radar for a while now. Not only does it promise a traditional MMO experience and lots of Star Wars related goodness, but it also contains the story, character development, and conversation trees that Bioware is known for. My hands-on with the game quickly made me realize that this is a game that I could easily get lost in.

Gamestop, Amazon and Best Buy getting different content.

Remember GoldenEye 007 on the N64? You do? Good. Remember the Wii remake from last year? Sort of? Good enough. You know the HD remake of the Wii remake? No? Well, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is the current generation remake we all wanted from the Nintendo 64 original. Now Activision has announced that pre-ordering at Amazon, Best Buy or Gamestop will get you additional content; what that content is depends on which store you trusted to save it for you.

This galaxy is closer than you think.

It looks as if EA has a pretty firm release date set for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The highly-anticipated MMORPG from BioWare has been in development for quite some time, and rumors of an astronomical budget have created an understandable amount of skepticism regarding release dates.
