93 Games

It seems like 93 games at this point, but in fact, it is just ten games from a list of about thirty 1993 games I'm interested in. What I'll play is exactly one. . . and maybe two or three by the end of the week.

1. Kirby's Adventure (NES): I'll be playing this on Kirby's Dream Collection for Wii. I went on a quick look-see at Jay Street Video Games (https://www.jaystvideogames.com/) but didn't find the original NES game. It's always nice to play the original, but it'll be just fine on Wii.

2. Doom (PC): The almighty Doom came out in '93. I played it with my friend Mark on networked Pentium 75 mhz computers back then. From there I played many similar FPS games on PC and console in the 90s. I have Doom in all it's gory glory on Xbox Live and will give it a spin on the weekend.

3. Magic: The Gathering (Card): Yes, I'm including card games in my list. Magic started in '93 and became a huge deal in the 90s with tournaments and everything. I didn't get into it at the time, but only much later in the 2000s. I lost my cards sometime after that. I'm considering going to my comic store and getting a starter pack. I may also play the Magic: The Gathering - Duel of the Planeswalkers games on Xbox Live this weekend.

4. Daffy Duck: The Marvin Missions (SNES)  I always loved the Maurice Noble background art in the Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century cartoon. I want to see more of that style in the game. I couldn't find it at Jay Street Video Games today, and it's not in any collections, so I'll have to wait until I'm willing to get it on Amazon, where it's super cheap. I don't have my SNES anymore though. I'd like to get a Retron 3 or 5, and I guess that'll be the cheapest way to play an original SNES cart. I'd love to do that.

5. Darkwing Duck (GB): Couldn't find this in the wild but it's cheap on Amazon. One day I'll get it and play it. I loved the art style of the TV show a lot. I got to see how they translatted that to the video game.

6. Shadowrun (SNES): I didn't think I'd find this in a store, and I didn't. It's almost $50 used on Amazon. I'd love to play it sometime.

7. Secret of Mana (SNES): I can totally play this on Wii Virtual Console, and I will sometime. The loose cart of this is $65 on Amazon right now. Yikes! I'll stick with Virtual Console.

8. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar (NES): I don't know how well this PC port to NES worked, but I'd love to play this game.

9. Shining Force (Genesis): I've played it before on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, but didn't finish it. I want to finish it. It's awesome!

10. Phantasy Star IV (Genesis): As with Shining Force, so with this one. My favorite of the Phantasy Star games.

Next up, 1993 Books, which includes literature, comics and art books.

I played Shining Force on the Genesis. It was a rental, and for what I paid in late fees, I probably could have bought the game. I have the GBA port, and I also have it on Sonic's UGC.

It's a cool game. I got stuck on one part the first time I played it. I want to play it again for sure.

Kirby's Adventure is one of the best NES games you'll play.  It's amazing (probably because it was one of the last NES games).  I hope you get to play Kirby Super Star when you get to games from 1996.

I rented that Daffy Duck game on SNES a long time ago.  It's not too bad.  Definitely a fun rental anyway.

I really enjoyed Secret of Mana.  That was back in my Square fanboy days.  That game had really neat pastel graphics and a unique musical score.  It was a bit buggy (you could even 'break' the game), and you could tell it was really meant to be designed for the SNES CD add-on that got cancelled.  But I really liked it anyway for some reason.

I never had a Genesis, but if I did at that age, I would've been all into Phantasy Star 4.  I played it a long time later and thought I would really like it when I was at that age where FF4 and FF6 were my favorite games.  Speaking of which, when you get to 1994, I hope you give FF6 a chance, too.

I've been trying to get to Kirby Adventure all week, but I keep having to finish more of this '93 research. I just did books and now I've got to do film. Then I can start playing. Maybe tomorrow night for sure.

I just heard Axe of the Blood God (Kat Bailey at USGamer.com) podcast talk about FF5 and 6. There's this FF5 Four Job Fiesta web site they talked about and then talked about FF6 too. Those are going to be high on my list for the years they came out.

If it's anything like the NES version, they made Darkwing translate to video games by making him Mega Man with a zip line and climbing ability.

Sounds cool.

It's also a really hard platformer though. Just a heads up.

Awe, I just look at the animation. Like books, I don't actually read them, just look at the illustrations. Har har.

Phantasy Star IV is a great game, and my respect for it is deep.  Never won it, but I've played through the first half a couple times.  Have you beat it?

Of course not. It's a rare game that I actually finish, especially RPGs. They're just too darn long.  I want to play it again though. I got farther in that one than any of the previous Phantasy Star games, that's for sure.

Wow I didn't know Magic started in '93. I do remember that the cards were hard to find around here. I thought about buying a couple of packs just to add to my collection of trading cards. I remember playing Doom on my friend's computer and didn't really have my own copy until college (it was on a random disc with like a free trial of AOL.)

I went to look at getting a starter pack today and was totally confused with all the variations you can get. I wanted to get a two pack set but I'm not sure I can get my friend Mark to play it with me and solitaire is pretty boring. I think I'll just play against the computer on Xbox.

I don't know how I got a copy of Doom on PC. I don't remember even buying any game until around '95 when Playstation came out. I definitely bought Doom on Playstation though.

I played Kirby's Adventure last for the first time since it came out on the NES. Still holds up. It's really the game that Kirby franchise into its own. And so pretty for an NES game!

I'd love to play the two Shadowrun games from back then (the SNES and Genesis games are completely different...which I'm sure you already knew) but yeah, they're both pretty expensive on the secondhand market Frown I picked up Shadowrun Returns a couple months ago but still haven't started that yet, so that would come first at least.

Dang it, I still need to play Doom.

Ooo! I forgot about the Shadownrun on Genesis. I'll have to add that to my list too.

Man, I gotta play Brutal Doom sometime. It was a PC mod that increased the gore in the game and added a few new abilities.
