Benny and Joon is one of my favorite comedies, which says a lot, because I'm not normally into comedies. And I can't believe you've never seen Nightmare Before Christmas! Pay attention, the entire dialogue is a massive poem. I think The Wrong Trousers is actually the second Wallace and Gromit movie, though. The first one, I believe, is A Grand Day Out.
'93 Film and TV

Here's my top ten list of stuff I want to watch or rewatch from 1993. Right now I'm watching the first season of Batman: The Animated Series. When I finish that, I'll get on to this stuff.
Army of Darkness |
Splitting Heirs (Eric Idle) |
Fortress (Lambert scifi) |
The Nightmare Before Christmas |
Batman: Mask of The Phantasm |
Cronos (Del Toro) |
Benny & Joon |
Bill Nye The Science Guy |
The State |
Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers |
Army of Darkness is the third Evil Dead film by Sam Raimi. It had lots of special effects reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen and was probably the silliest of the Evil Dead films. Bruce Campbell says, "Give me some sugar." to his leading lady. Really? Whatever, this is a super fun watch and I'd see it again anytime.
Splitting Heirs stars Eric Idle of Monty Python fame and has lots of Pythons in it. I may have seen it before, being a huge Monty Python fan, but I don't remember anything about it. I think I'll see it again.
Fortress is a Australian scifi film staring Christopher Lambert. What is it about Australian scifi films that is so appealing to me? It must be the dystopian futures they're always set in. Hey, there's lots of desert out there in Australia. Why not use it.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Tim Burton film I've always wanted to see and still haven't.
Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm comes right from Bruce Timm and the Animated TV series I'm watching right now. I may have seen it, but it's worth seeing again. I love that TV show so much. They just nailed Batman.
Cronos is Guillermo Del Toro's first feature film. I love everything thing he's been involved with so far. I have to see this.
Benny & Joon. I've always wanted to see this querky romantic comedy staring Johnny Depp. It seemed like a movie about me and my girlfriend back in '93, maybe?
Now we're on to TV stuff:
Bill Nye The Science Guy. I used to love the few episodes I caught here and there on TV. I especially liked the way the show was shot. All sorts of crooked angles and wide angle closeups. Somebody was into early German Expressionist cinema for sure.
The State is a skit comedy show and one of the best. It spawned lots of current stars like Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Showalter, Michael Ian Black, Ben Garant, and David Wain. If you've seen Reno 911, you know most of these people. I'd watch all 28 episodes again any time.
Now we're on to British TV. Ever since Monty Python, I had to check out what's going on across the pond:
Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers. The Aardman claymation film that started it all. Shawn the Sheep releases next month and I'm all over that.
And that's it for '93. I'll be thinking about it for the rest of the week until '94 rolls around on Tuesday.
