Music of '97

Here is a list of the music that I listened to back in '97.

Bonham, Jason Band In the Name of My Father - The Zepset
Dickinson, Bruce Accident of Birth
Fish Sunsets on Empire
Genesis Calling All Stations
Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions
Megadeth Cryptic Writings
Silverchair Freakshow
U2 POP
Various Men in Black sndtrck

Jason Bonham was the son of the late John Bonham, drummer of Led Zeppelin. He got together an excellent group that really did a great job playing Led Zeppelin. Here's one from it, Ten Years Gone.

Bruce Dickinson is the lead singer from Iron Maiden and he had a bunch of solo albums in the 90s. I stumbled across this one at some used record shop and gave it a listen. It's fantastic and has several songs I really like, chief among them The Magician. The album does have Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith helping out, and this song has some of that Maiden feel. I'd like to play this while playing Diablo III - as a magician of course.

Fish is the ex-singer of prog rock group Marillion and continued the imaginative lyrics in his solo albums. I followed him and left his old bandmates by the roadside. I hear they still make records. Whatever. I would direct you to the song Brother 52 for some of the spirit of the original Marillion.

This Genesis album was their last and without Phil Collins (should've been called And Then There Were Two). It has more of the flavor of a Mike Rutherford (Mike & The Mechanics) record. I was mildly interested in it but I did like the song Shipwrecked on it.

More Led Zeppelin. I guess in the 90s the BBC was starting to release stuff from it's vaults because soon there were all sorts of BBC Sessions albums out there for all sorts of groups. Why they held onto them for so long is a mystery, but Zep live is a fun listen.

Megadeth was really a thing of past for me at this point (also Metallica) but I heard Almost Honest on the radio in '97 and liked it. The rest of the album is fine, just not a classic, but that song. What a great guitar riff! I think '97 was the last year I listened to live radio. The old process was: you'd hear a song on the radio you liked, and you'd go buy the album. At some point that year I'd had enough with endless commercials and started making my own mixes to play in my car while I worked. I'm still doing it today, but on an iPod. How things change, but stay the same.

I liked Silverchair. I forget just what song it was I heard that I liked, but I'll hunt this album down and hear it again. Maybe it was Freak.

U2's Pop album was all over the airwaves. I think it was Discotheque that I liked. Not sure, but it's U2 and they're mostly good.

The Men in Black soundtrack was really good. Got some Snoop Dog in there and NAS. Lots of the songs have that Fresh Prince feel: a little jazz, funk and rap. The Notic with The Roots and D'Angelo is a good example. This album seems like a Will Smith mix tape.

As usual, there are a lot of albums I haven't heard yet and that are on my list of 50 albums. Hopefully I can get to them all.

I have Cryptic Writings, but I think Almost Honest is just meh and prefer other songs on that album. Different strokes.

You sure "Tomorrow" wasn't the Silverchair song you liked? That was their big hit from what I remember.

'97 was when I bought my first two CDs ever ... Garbage 2.0 and the first Hanson CD. Yup.

Loved that Garbage 2.0 album. I bought my first copy from I think Circuit City. I didn't know who they were but I liked the cover. I scratched the hell out of that copy when I worked the front desk of my dorm.

I didn't know who they were either, but I really liked the song "When I Grow Up" when I heard it in the Big Daddy movie and previews.

Yea, it was probably Tomorrow.

Ok here's a first, a list of albums I've never heard any of. OK I've probably heard the odd track but usually there's an album or two I know reasonably well. Not in this case. I was never into Marillion, they were like a Genesis cover band without the covers to me.

I always thought Fish of Marillion, with his face paint, was imitating Peter Gabriel, and the guitarist Steve Hackett. I didn't mind though because all my favorite bands had given in to the stripped down rock of the 80s. Few were doing anything theatrical any more.

I wasn't a fan of that U2 album. At this point I wasn't listening to much of U2 and I think I was heavy into No Doubt, Dance Hall Crashers, Save Ferris, and Reel Big Fish. I do remember someone in my dorm winning tickets to this concert.

I can't say I've listened to a lot of MIB Soundtrack but its something I should add to the library. I'd like to track down that Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions album. I have the Hendrix BBC and I liked it.

We had the BBC sessions at the radio station. And I love all the ska stuff you mentioned. One of my favorite genres.

I think what I was mostly listening to in '97 was old school metal. My band mate Cory introduced me to the genre and I started collecting 80s metal bands.

I just picked up that Zep BBC sessions today at my used record store. It's a two disc set. Lots of music there.
