Get N64 or Get Out: 1998 in Games

Looking at the list of games I played back then, it looks like I was getting my roudy on with the N64. Game Boy Color came out, but I was not into handheld gaming at the time. I think my PC must've busted because I didn't get on Heretic 2 or Half-Life that year, not to mention Grim Fandango. Co-op gaming was still my jam and I found it in a few titles on this list. So here it is.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil N64
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron N64
BattleTanx N64
Clayfighter Sculptor's Cut N64
Gauntlet Legends N64
Quake 64 N64
Rampage World Tour N64
Wargames: Defcon 1 PS
Road Rash 3D PS
Blasto  PS

Turok 2. Yet another FPS. This time you shoot at dinosaurs and robots. It continued from the first game and was more fun of the same type. Watch the trailer. What else can I say than: FPS, dinosaurs and robots?

Star Wars Rogue Squadron was a treat! A good Star Wars game where you flew various space craft and used them to wrap up the legs of Imperial Walkers. I totally dug it.

BattleTanx was a great game. I really wanted a co-op campaign but at least there was multiplayer. I think the next game in the series had co-op. You run all over the place in a tank and blow things up. What more can I say? Gotta love it. Hilarious trailer too.

Clayfighter Sculptor's Cut. Picked this up at Blockbuster Video before I knew anything about the Clayfighter series. Turns out it's super rare today. It was just Clayfighter 63 1/3 with some extra characters and a full song intro. I had a lot of fun with it.

Gauntlet Legends. Now here's some co-op action! Played this one to death with my friend Mark. I followed the Gauntlet games for years after. I wonder what happened to that series? Haven't seen it in a while.

Quake 64. More Quake on the consoles; had to play it again.

Rampage World Tour was nice. You play as a giant movie monster, climb buildings and wreck stuff. Best of all, you could eat people for energy. I loved grabbing people out of windows and GULP!

Wargames Defcon 1 on Playstation. It was an isomentric view action game very loosely based on the film War Games. You could choose vehicles or aircraft or mechs and run amok on maps with various objectives and do it all in co-op. Mark and I played this to the very end of the campaign. I vividly remember making myself a Dr. Pepper ice-cream soda while we beat the last level. i think I can still taste it. YUM!

Road Rash 3D on Playstation was a disappointment after the amazing remake of the first game. I seem to remember it had to do with the handling, because looking at the trailer now, it seems like it should've been awesome.

Blasto was a 3D adventure game featuring the voice of the soon to be late Phil Hartman of SNL fame. I didn't play much of it because I seem to remember the aiming was atrocious. Still, the main character had lots of funny one-liners. It makes me think of a Ratchet & Clank game in the rough.

What do I want to play most from the rest of the list of 24 other games? Hummm, played Ocarina of Time, some Banjo-Kazooie, Grim Fandango on Vita, Half-Life on PS2, Baldur's Gate on PC, and I own and have played with the Game Boy Camera. . . probably Suikoden II which I now have on PSN for PS3.

Turok 2: 3rd person adventure dinosaur-robots still gonna beat it :) lol

Rogue Squadron was always too hard for me for some reason. Loved what I played of II on Gamecube though. Such a pretty game at the time.

Battle Tanx was just awesome.

You thinking of selling Sculptor's Cut as a collector's item? I'm not a buyer, I'm just curious.

Rampage World Tour was always cool mindless fun.

Might have to take a look at Blasto, didn't know hartman was the voice

Hartman is the best thing about that game.

That's the truth.

Rogue Squadron does get difficult for sure. Not selling my Sculptor's Cut. No way. Not if it was going for a thousand bucks. Ten thousand maybe.

I know I played a lot of games in 1998, but it was all kind of a blur.  I remember more things I played in 1999 and 2000.

Played a lot of Dreamcast? That was mentioned in the details of '98 but only in Japan. I can't wait to look over that library of games. I really liked the Dreamcast.

Dreamcast didn't come out here in the US until 9/9/1999.  I got one for Christmas/Graduation present.

I can never remember when I picked up a console. I know I never bought anything new until that summer of '06 when I got a Xbox 360 and Oblivion.

I don't think I ever touched a Turok game until the PS2. Clayfighters was fun, and that's a shame about Road Rash. I own it but it was one of the games I bought but haven't tried it. Is this when the GameBoy Color was released? This was right around the time when I started getting back into gaming so I missed it. I do remember when the Advance was announced.

Just wait until Road Rash Jailbreak. That went even farther downhill and the series hasn't had a comeback until someone did a '95 style Road Rash on PC recently. Wish it would come to consoles.

Game Boy Color started in '98. I didn't get into handhelds until the DS in '04 but I started to get interested with the GBA. Advance Wars!

No Zelda: Ocarina of Time? That was the big game of 1998. Lots of great games in that year.

I was playing a lot with my friend Mark, so it was mostly games with a multiplayer component. I played Ocarina much later.

Ocarina of Time, Xenogears, Resident Evil 2, Parasite Eve, Banjo-Kazooie, and Tekken 3 were my big 1998 games. One 1998 under-the-radar gem I loved was Breath of Fire III.

What?! Breath of Fire III. I missed that one on my list. The darn Playstation list on wiki is so messed up. You sort it by release date and nothing lines up right. What's up with that?

Played a lot of Turok 2.  Really liked that game, actually. Good soundtrack.  It was dope game for the time, fuck the haterz.

Those Rogue Squadron games are all so beautiful.

It's too bad Rogue Squadron dev Factor 5 kinda dropped the ball on Lair. I wanted to love that game.

Thief, BG2, Metal Gear Solid, Half Life, Starcraft, Ocarina of Time, and so on. A banner year across the board.

Don't forget Pokemon: Red and Blue. Amazing how so many revolutionary games and start of so many huge IPs all happened in one year.

Yea, 1998 was pretty darn great for gaming. I guess it makes sense though

Some say 1998 is the best year in gaming and I honestly can't argue with that.

It's darn good, but look at 2001: GBA, Gamecube and Xbox came out with some interesting games (Advance Wars, Luigi's Mansion, Halo) and also PS2 with GTA III..
