Six Games Loaded

Played a bunch of stuff this weekend.

Started off with an achievement challenge with the game Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear. This game is an on-rails shooter. You are an American military Ranger and you have to take out positions in Afganistan with various weapons including an attack helicopter and flying gun ship.  I think this game must've been designed for a light gun type thing because the controls are horrendous for a controller. The previous game in the series supports the Playstation Move controller, so it might be better there. There was also no options to change settings for the controls. If I could've reduced the sentivity on the analog stick for aiming and moved the aim to the right stick (like it is in every other game) things would've been great and it would've been a fun quick ride. As it is, my friend Mark quit out right away and I got about 2/3rds the way through before frustration set in.

Next up was some replay of Borderlands The Pre-Sequel. Mark and I tried to beat Deadlift on Ultimate Vault Hunter but his character was now level 54 and I just 50. You would think that wouldn't make much difference, but on Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, I was having trouble surviving and all the weapon drops were above my level. I guess I could've stayed in and just soaked up XP, but I don't like playing like that. Onward.

Then it was finishing the main story in Sacred 3 playing co-op. The graphics of the game, aside from cutscenes, are actually really good. It looks just as good as Diablo III. The gameplay is sharp too. We had some trouble beating the final boss, but figured it out pretty quick. There are two more difficulty levels to replay the whole game. That was the end of the first day of my weekend though.

The next day saw me change my game list around. I decided to play the shortest games in my library first. The shortest was Jumper: Griffin's Story. This is based on the movie where the main character has the ability to teleport anywhere at will. A secret society is trying to kill The Jumpers off. The game isn't too bad. The fighting mechancs are actually pretty cool. You do melee attacks by "jumping" around the environments - reminded me of X-Men Origins: Wolverine a bit. The trick is to hit an enemy on their weak side, shown by a green highlight. When you do that, a power meter fills and then you get a special move. Aside from this there is a random special kill move (like a Mortal Kombat fatality - I couldn't figure out what triggers it though) that gives you a cut scene showing you grabbing the enemy and teleporting them to various locations for a kill. One was high up in the atmosphere where he leaves the enemy to drop. Others feature: a polar bear, sharks and a bomb testing site. Those were really cool. It is difficult to really nail those attack jumps to an enemy's weak spot however. The camera swings around a lot and then it's difficult to figure out what button to press to get him to attack the right place. Against tougher enemies, this became an issue and I didn't finish the game.

Then I put in Mayhem 3D (all of these are Xbox 360 so far btw). This is a demolition derby game I hadn't much expectation for other than easy achievements, but wow! This is a great game! It has that high contrast black, white, and red design style that MadWorld has. The important thing though was the car controls and they were perfect. The game controls very well and there are lots of interesting tracks and arenas to battle in. You crash/race and just plain crash against a bunch of cars, collecting parts that fly off that give you a boost for greater speed. There's a career mode that takes you through sets of race types in a kind of story. There are comic book covers which illustrate each set and they are dynamite. Really great designs! I almost got to the last (I think it was the seventh) set before I took a break for Philly football. I think I've found my last gen Destruction Derby 2. This game is great!

After the game (Phily lost on a missed field goal. Rats!), I set up my PS3 and played an hour or so of Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty. Man I love the Ratchet & Clank games. This one is a lot of fun and gorgeous. I finally got to set up my PS3 with full HD settings on my new TV and that was amazing. The game looks great!

Anyway, that's my long weekend of gaming. It's 2001 this week, so expect a blog sometime this week about that.

2001 was a rough year for me.  But the GameCube did come out and we did get great games on it like Luigi's Mansion, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Monkey Ball!

Right now I'm playing mostly Super Mario Maker.  But the flood of games is upon us, and I'll be reviewing and playing more soon!

I had to pay for my own Gamecube for Christmas (most of it anyway, didn't pay for Luigi's Mansion I don't think). It was a rough year for 11-year old me too, but those were some good times. I turned into a full-on Nintendo fanboy and tried to bring down the Xbox as hard as I could, though the cool kids still ate it up. To be fair, I got jealous of their console sometimes and was mostly so die-hard about Gamecube cause it was cheapest, but it had some great games.

Anyway, of the games listed here, I really only recognize Borderlands and Ratchet, but some of the others sound interesting. I played an on-rails shooter for PlayStation 4 recently, but forgot its name. I'm excited for the Ratchet and Clank remake and movie next year.

In closing, whooo Eagles loss! Tongue Out Fletcher Cox and Sproles are beasts though. Demarco Murray on the other hand seems to have lost something transitioning from Dallas to Phili.

I was wondering what happened to the Ratchet & Clank movie. Wasn't it supposed to come out a year ago?

I hate games that come down to a field goal. So lame.

I love the tension in games like that, honestly.

Definitely exciting. I wanna see touchdowns though.

It was rough for me too. I lost my job that spring and had to settle for a worse one later that summer. Then I almost quit that one too. Well, I survived I guess.

2001 was a weird year for me. Quit my job in San Francisco and moved back to Maryland.  Kind of wish I hadn't, in retrospect.

Lots of changes for me too. Not a great year for me.

I've seen those Heavy Fire games but never tried them. Good to know they are built more for the move controller. I guess I have to charge my move controller.

I liked 2001. I think that was around the time I had to rebuild my Playstation library because they got lost during the move back to school, and right around the time I started thinking about getting a PS2.

I have to get a move controller sometime and give those games made for light guns a try. I had a list around here somewhere of all the ones for PS3.

Tell me more about Sacred 3. I heard nothing but bad things about that game when it came out. What did you think of the gameplay?

It's very much like Diablo III. I think the previous Sacred games were different (more hardcore RPGs?) so maybe that's why fans weren't on board with it. There's not a lot of customization of your character and the gameplay is fairly simple.
