Got EDF 4.1, and Thinking of Skylanders

I picked up my preorder for Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair for PS4 today (see pic below). This is the improved version of EDF 2025. I got it with some discount after a half dozen trades of games I've already played. I'd like to get through more of my backlog to create more trade bait for new games. After watching a bunch of videos here at Pixlbit last night, 2016 is looking like a crazy good year full of games I'd like to have day-one.

(not sure where the funny red cast is coming from. Probably a traffic light as I was shooting in my car)

I saw that EDF 2 for Vita also came out. I was very tempted to get that too, but I'd rather play that on my TV and not my Vita - big robots need to be BIG! But it may never come to console, so I'm still thinking about it.

I was at the Five Below store today as well to return a faulty plasma globe when I saw some three-pack, Series 2 Skylanders for $5 each. I was very tempted, but I told myself I should stick to my list or I'll go broke on these things.

Rob, my Gamestop salesman, explained to me the "series" Skylanders. I can see how making new versions of the old figures for a new game is valuable to those playing the game at release, but for me playing them so late, and thinking of getting more figures, it's very daunting looking at all the choices I have. He also said the 3DS Skylanders games were not good. I still like the figures though.

That's all folks.

That's the thing with constantly-growing games/series. I feel like once I'm finally able to jump in, everyone's been going strong for some time and I'm just jumping somewhere on the end of things or being left behind.

I created a "relevancy" list of my games recently for just that reason. I figured it would give me a playlist that would keep me mostly up-to-date, but I found the list too predictible, and I didn't look forward to it. My list by completion times, shortest to longest, gives me a great variety of games, and has me excited for each weekend. I'll go with that over doing something that might lead me to quit gaming altogether.

It's like thinking about writing reviews for games. Yes, it's more respectible than just blogging, but I find it incredibly boring and dull.

yeah i get bored talking game mechanics. kinda something you just have to experience

I find the review thing just too formulaic: now here's about the graphics, now the sound, now the gameplay, the story, yada yada yada. I get it's information people want to read about, but it's tedious to write. Like that technical writing field a temp service employee tried to interest me in. Ug. Why don't you just try and kill my interest in writing, why don't you.

I loved skylanders however Superchargers really killed it for me. Cars were not a good fit. I started Lego Dimensions and still am enjoying Disneys. Id only collect figures u really want to use. It can get costly collecting them all.

I think you said in your review that the SuperChargers racing game was difficult? That's not a good sign, but I love the figurines.

"Id only collect figures u really want to use." Exactly what I want to do.

Id say yes but because the vehciles can be a pain to control. I think the mechanics for them werent as strong as they should have been.

Whoops, I meant, "I think Cary said in his review". Did you review it too?

those EDF games really fly under the radar. But I guess they have a sizeable audience. when you say improved, what does that mean?  is this a new game or an update of a last gen game?

The series is pretty big in Japan. EDF 3 (called Insect Armageddon here) was a best seller there. EDF 4.1 is "an enhanced port" of EDF 2025. It has spruced up graphics, runs with less slow down, and has kaiju and giant robots you can control. Here's a trailer:

Didn't know there was an EDF game on the PS4. I know you're going to get your monies worth out of it. Good to hear about the 3DS version. I've been tempted quite a few times to get that because I've seen it on clearance at one of the Walmarts. If anything I'd probably pick up Infinity for the handhelds because I already own the figures.

My only problem is that I won't be able to play online coop with Mark because he doesn't have a PS4. I'll have to deal with randoms. I'm getting used to that though with EDF: IA.

I was told by a Gamestop employee that the 3DS Skylanders games aren't very good. He didn't say why though. According to Metacritic, Spyro's Adventure for 3DS was good (in the 80s) but the others weren't (in the 60s). I think I know what I'll be adding to my list.

I think its worth it to buy the Skylanders stuff if you are going to be play it on multiple consoles. I know one of the Skylanders games are also available on iPad and it has a special portal. I can see Spyro being a solid title because Spyro I thought help sell the original launch of those games.

I think the figures work on any console, but you need a different portal for each console.

Yeah the Portals are different because that a lot of cash the developers are leaving on the table if they make them universal.
