2013, The Year I Bought a PS Vita

Thinking about 2013 this week, mostly through my music playlist, but I included the other media just for fun.

MUSIC

Then - About the best thing I can think of is this song off a compilation album, Big Waves: Five Decades of Surf Rock, called NY '79 by Laika & The Cosmonauts. Laika was the dog the Russians put into orbit back in the late 50s. Anyway, I really love the guitar in this song. If only I could get one of their albums, I'm sure there's more tasty guitar.

Now - I'm interested in this soundtrack to the movie CBGB that came out that year. CBGB was a famous club in New York in the 70s where some of the best punk bands performed. The soundtrack is a mix of both familiar and not so familiar (at least to me anyway) bands. Luckily I have it now and will be listening to it this week. .

GAMES

Then - I bought a Vita wanting to play Muramasa Rebirth and Dragon's Crown. I got in right when it was announced there was going to be a cheaper version with a less sharp screen. I wanted that glorious OLED screen of the original, and picked one up before they went scarce. I have to say, I haven't used it much since then. The Cave on XBLA was probably the game I liked the most, and which I completed every challenge.

Now - I'd like to get more time in with a lot of games I bought day-one but didn't find much time for like Fire Emblem: Awakening, Etrian Odyssey IV, and Dragon's Crown

BOOKS

Then - Halo: Silentium by Greg Bear was the last of his Forerunner Trilogy. I loved that series a lot.

Now - Can't say I saw anything on that list I wanted to read or hadn't read already like Jared Diamond's The World Until Yesterday.

FILM

Then - I really saw the Studio Ghibli film The Wind Rises in early 2014 because it came to N.A. a little late, but it was on the 2013 awards shows. I so love the Studio Ghibli films. Pacific Rim was a bunch of fun. An American take on the giant monster films. I loved Charlie Day, of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as the mad scientist who loves Kaiju and wants to bond his mind to thiers. I can't wait for the sequel maybe coming next year.

Now - I heard about the documentary of Jodorowsky's Dune, and really want to see it. Also this film Snowpiercer which a friend of mine urged me to see.

And that was my 2013. What about yours?

Honestly, right now, I can't really think of a good reason to own one. They just released Civilization Revolution 2+ for it though. I'm considering that since it was only on iOS before this.

Pacific Rim, the film I like to call the best worst film I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong after the second time I watched it I started to like because its a fun popcorn movie with big robots and monsters. I'll probably check out the second one whenever it gets made.

Was it 2013 or 14 when I bought my 360 with my can of loose change? It was around that time and it was fun to try out a new console and have a different gaming option.

I have a CD with a bunch of acts recorded at CBGB I found in the $5 section at Best Buy, and a bootleg of Paramore playing there (the audio isn't as good). Shame that venue had to close, and I think I heard it became a store

Pacific Rim is just like the EDF games I'm playing right now: they are both just big dumb fun.

I'm interested in the first generation of punk and underground bands. That's when CBGBs was the place to be.

2013 WAS THE WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE, BUT THE BEGINNING OF A TRANSFORMATION.

And I just realized my caps lock waqs on. Not gonna fix it now.

Music - Macklemore. So much Macklemore. Got his 2012 release The Heist for my bday and it helped inspire me to get through that shit year. Put my cat down, was stressed and depressed doing my Master's after job market hadn't turned out. Yeah, definitely glad he was popular that year ... think "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea was most-played song that year. Liked it ok, but it was a bad year for music overall I think. 1979 on the other hand was probably an amazing year for music I like. That CBGB movie looks interesting, but looks like critics HATED it and it didn't make much money. Now that's punk rock! Tongue Out

I played Fez on Steam and wrote a big ass blog about how important perspective is, which is a big theme in that game and a theme for me in that year in general.

I need to read more books but The World Until Yesterday sounds interesting. What's is about?

I saw Snowpierecer later on Netflix, where it still is. That movie is awesome.

The World Until Yesterday shows how modern society can learn a few things from the old way of tribal life: small tight-knit groups living close to nature.

Did you ever see Jordorowsky's Dune, Knight? One of my favorite documentaries of the past 5 years.

I just watched the trailer, and I heard all about it on a podcast too. I'll see it sometime.

I saw Jordorowsky's Dune. I didn't like it too much despite being a huge fan of the book. Too many people praising what would have been "amazing" yet the reality is the movie would have been 4 or 5 hours and probably unwatchable.

Jordorowsky in that trailer certainly had a pretty crazy ambition for it. Maybe too crazy.
