In looking at games set in the 17th century, my theme for February, I came across this 2001 PS2 game Dark Angel: Vampire Apocalypse. It's full of dark gothic fantasy visuals and supposedly set in 1670. Gothic fantasy was created in the 18th century in literature and it looks back to medieval times for its feelings of horror. So is this game really set in 17th century? No, only in its own world's timeline. Whatevs, It takes as it's influence Diablo and Fallout, enough said. I got my retro store to mail it to me from New York for $8. Here's a pic:

Here's some gameplay. Looks like there's guns as well as swords in this action RPG.

it's funny how long "gothic" has been a thing in literature, and then movies, and now games. I guess if something works, it works.  I love gothic stuff too, that architecture just begs for creepy ghosts and ghouls and dark secrets.

Umberto Eco made a good point though.  For most people living in medieval times, color was very vibrant as they mostly were up during the day, and not up at night cause there was no light.  We kind of think of medieval times as being gray and lightless, but it's really quite the opposite, and medieval art shows that.

Still, I love me some gothic!

Yea, the Gothic thing coming from medieval times is totally not from actual medieval times but from the modern (meaning 18th c and up) perception of it being The Dark Ages and all that. Also, I've read it's also about opinions of the Catholic religion and their "creepy" rituals. And speaking of which, I saw and heard lots of references to medieval times Catholic stuff in the new Dark Souls III trailers I just watched: bosses which looked strangely like priests and music right out of a church service.

Please tell me how that game is because there's hasn't been a video game/Game Stop store where I haven't seen that game in the bargin bin and I've always been slightly curious.

Also FYI, if you are looking for games set in the 17th century, Soul Edge and Soul Calibur's 1-4 are set within that time frame.

I'm going to try Port Royale 3 this weekend, that is if I can keep the Destiny stuff at bay for at least part of my weekend, and then I'll play Dark Angel. I may even try and get to Dark Angel at home this week, but I'm not confident I'll find the weekday time.

I saw the Soul Calibur games on a list, but I'm not much of a fighting game fan unless it's Clayfighter or something silly.

The muzzle flash on that gun tho! Wow!

Yea, it's like an old musket that's stuffed with gunpowder and lighted with a matchlock - clouds of smoke. I guess that's sorta 17th century.

I'm a bit worried the camera is pulled out a little too much. You seem pretty far from the action, but it's very similar to Diablo 2 that way.

Me too, and I've poured over game lists for years now. Not sure how I missed it.

Yea, PS2 was top dog in those years. I still remember the lines when it released. Ooo, it's also a DVD player. Gotta get one. I didn't get one right away though. I was, and still am, primarily an Xbox fanboy, mostly because of Halo.

Wow there's a cover I haven't seen in ages! I don't know why I never gave it a chance but its one of those games for me that it doesn't pop up all that often.

It got mixed reviews. Probably not a great game, but I'll try it for fun. The developer folded in 2005 or so.
