What I Played in 2016

Last few years I've been keeping a spreadsheet of all the media I've experienced. I've got games, books, movies, and music recorded. Let's do games.

Top Ten Most Played Video Games of 2016

1. Minecraft (X360, XBO) - 412 hrs
2. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition (XBO) - 92 hrs
3. Disney Infinity 2.0 (X360) - 66 hrs
4. Defense Grid 2 (XBO) - 64 hrs
5. Disney Infinity 1.0 (X360) - 55 hrs
6. Doom [2016] (XBO) - 51 hrs
7. Destiny (X360) - 48 hrs
8. Skylanders: Superchargers (XBO) - 46 hrs
9. Disney Infinity 3.0 (X360) - 45 hrs
10. Sacred 3 (X360) - 44 hrs.

2016 was definitely the year of the toys-to-life games for me. I discovered them because of a sale on figures and starter packs at Gamestop just after the holidays in 2015. I went through all the Disney Infinity games and then three Skylanders games. I'm not finished with the genre either. I have Lego Dimensions now and the XBO versions of Disney Infinity 2 and 3. I also haven't finished with Skylanders Imaginators or started Swap Force, both on XBO. 2017 will likely see me still playing them.

My most played systems this year were Xbox 360 and XBO. I only started playing XBO in June even though I'd bought it during black friday of 2015. I think it was mainly so that Mark and I could still play together since he didn't have an XBO yet. He got one in August, I think, and then the X360 ended up in the closet for both of us.

My next most played systems were PS4 and 3DS. Unlike the XBO, I started playing the PS4 right after I got it the same black friday 2015 with EDF 4.1, but no game made the most played list; although, Ratchet & Clank [2016] just missed the list at 37 hours. It would've been number 11 on a longer list. 3DS was my next most played system. Dragon Quest VII would've been number 13 on a longer list at 35 hours.

I also gave each game a one-to-five star rating based on the Netflix system. One being, "I hated it"; two: "I disliked it"; three: "I liked it"; four: "I liked it alot"; five: "I loved it". I gave 17 games a five star rating:

Minecraft
Diablo III: U.E.E.
Defense Grid 2
Doom [2016]
Halo: Master Chief Collection
XCOM 2
Saints Row IV
Gears of War Ultimate
Costume Quest
Costume Quest 2
Ticket to Ride
Crystal Defenders
Banner Saga
Earth Defense Force 2025
Carcassonne
The Maw
Valkyria Chronicles Remastered

I had 105 games total on my list. Probably only a half dozen or so were actually released in 2016. I hope to change that in 2017. I'd like a high precentage of my game playing to be the current years' games. That being said, I'm kind of yearning to replay Borderlands via the Handsome Collection right now. Gotta go with what nature tells you in the end.

Next: My 2017 must-play list.

2017 Im pretty positive will be a good year for games. There is a lot of stuff currently set for it including the new system from Nintendo. I already have several titles preordered through Amazon. I didnt complete very many games this year, im hoping to fix that this year.

I'm sure it'll be good. I just hope I don't have too many games on my "must play" list. I'd like it to be ten at the most.

That's a lot of games. Did you finish all those? I can't believe how many hours you put into Minecraft! I still gotta put together my own year end blog.

I definitely did not finish all of them. I wrote down every game I tried and then recorded roughly how much time I played them. Some games I didn't like and so only spent a hour or two on them. A few were demos too. There were about 25 games I put 10 hours or more into.

I added up all the time and it was 1384 hours which is about 3.8 hours a day. Seems kind of around what most poeple spend watching TV, but I rarely watch TV. I play my TV.

I don't think I could list all the games I played in 2016.  I guess you could look at my GamerDad reviews and get a good idea.  I'm working on a blog about what games I'm looking forward to in 2017 that'll probably be up at the end of the month or so.

Looking forward to it. I'm sure you'll mention ones I overlooked.

Wow, 400 hours for Minecraft. My most played game was Monster Hunter Generations at about 140 hours. There are very few games I put at 400 hours, much less in a single year. Though I probably put a few hundred hours into the Masterchief Collection last year.

It's probably the only game I've ever put that much time into. It wasn't so much doing creative building but Mark and I playing it over and over again as a kind of rpg in survival mode: you start with nothing and build what you need to beat the End Dragon. I also played it solo with all the hard settings on as a kind of surivival/horror game many times.

I sort of have the same type of list but I didn't keep up with it in 2016, but 2017 I probably will since it will sync to the laptop. In previous years I kept a list of games I beat, the date, and if I achieved a platinum. I leave the ratings for Backloggery.

I just looked at my files and I've been keeping records since 2011. I think blogging started me on that. I started blogging in 2010 at 1UP.

Man I miss 1Up. I used to just browse that site reading people's thoughts and looking at pictures of pickups and collections. Eventually I started using it but I used to complain about the people on the Playstation Message Boards. Talk about fanboys, some folks there took games way too serious.

How do you determine the time? by an in game clock or do actually keep up with the time yourself. Because although playing Metal Gear it shows at my last save 1 hour 25 mins. But you know I played longer than that because it doesnt count the times I die and redo a level...I think it doesnt

Sometimes I write down the time I start and end each game session, and other times I just remember how much I played at the end of the day and record it. I've checked some in game time clocks on occasion and they usually record a little less time. But if I'm basically playing a game between 1pm and 10pm, then that's 9 hours of play time. I don't care what the in game clock says.
