Gaming By Association: Mickey Mouse's 40th Anniversary in 1968

Yea, so I'm still doing this Gaming-by-Association thing on the side of my rentals. Why? It's fun.

I'm listening to music from 1968 this month and I wanted to tie in gaming in some way. Well, I played some submarine gameplay in Battlestations: Midway to honor the release of Sega's elctro-mechanical arcade game Periscope in '68. Then I played Disney Infinity 3.0: Marvel Battlegrounds with the Ultron figure to honor his 1968 creation in comics. Then I played Lego Marvel Avengers and unlocked Ultimate Ultron and played as him (and then I got hooked on the whole game and am still playing it). Then I just got Marvel Ultimate Alliance for Xbox 360 in the mail today and, if I have time, play it to see Ultron as a boss character.

But here's the problem with last gen systems. I play those at home, not at Mark's, and I often have a hard time getting to them. I want something new for the systems I have at Mark's place, where I do the most gaming. So I looked at Disney history to see what was interesting in 1968. Mostly it's all about dedications to Walt, who had died a few years before, but I noticed Life Magazine did a tribute to Mickey Mouse's 40th Anniversay. Mickey has been in a lot of games, so I looked for his most recent appearance. That would be the Castle of Illusion remake for PS3/X360. Luckily it is on PSN and is backwards compatible with XBO, so I can get that maybe.

But I'm trying to not overspend, so what else do I already have? There's Disney Infinity 3.0 and the Mickey Mouse figure. I don't have that one, there are crazy good sales going on right now all over the place, and I have the game already for XBO. I think I'll start there and get the Mickey Mouse figure. I have Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey (I currently have him displayed in a plastic globe as my favorite D.I. figure) but that came out for Disney Infinity 1.0 and is only on last gen systems. I could still use him in 2 and 3.0, but I'd like the newer Mickey and maybe Minnie too.

So that's my plan: get the Mickey Mouse figure to play in D.I. 3.0 and maybe see about getting the Castle of Illusion remake. I believe I played the original version on Genesis way back in the early 2000s. I'd like another try at it.

May the BaD be with you.

I wonder if The Mouse ever experimented ...

Would Mickey and Donald make a good odd couple?

I have the 360 version of Castle of Illusion.  I thought it was good.  I own the original Genesis version too.  I hadn't played that one in years.  I played it a lot during the '90s.

I have a strong memory of going to The Outer Banks in North Carolina for a holiday and picking it up at thrift shop, then bringing it to the house to play on Genesis. I want to see those graphics again.

Mickey's only 89 this year? For some reason I thought he'd be over 100.

I reviewed the Castle of Illusion remake.  It's a pretty decent little romp.  I don't have many memories of the Genesis game, as I had a SNES as a kid.  On the SNES they had a better Mickey game anyway in the form of Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse by Capcom.

It was a platformer, so I got frustrated with it, but it looked great (Castle of Illusion on Genesis).

I don't know if you have an android tablet but Amazon is offering Castle for free in their Underground App.

That's cool. I don't have a tablet though. I didn't realize that it was a remake. I thought it was just a port of old Castle of Illusion.
