Two Days Worth: Halo, Minecraft and Pirates

Friday I played Halo Spartan Assault and Halo 4: Spartan Ops. Then I started the install for Halo 5 and, after a full night and day, it's at 80%. So I played Minecraft while I waited and found myself in a strong position to go for the "respawn the Enderdragon" achievement. I also saw Pirates of the Caribbean in IMAX 3D.

I didn't finish Halo Spartan Assault because I got stuck on a mission near the end. Your shield rebuilds so amazingly slow. It was infuriating. However, I kind of liked the game, so I may take another stab at it when I can reinstall it. Halo 5's massive 50 GB made me remove a lot of stuff.

I didn't finish Halo 4: Spartan Ops either but I got Mark to play co-op with me until we both got too annoyed. This is a kind of Firefight mode where you're given short missions consisting of defending locations or toggling switches while hoards of enemies pour in on you. I really dislike Halo 4's gameplay. It's the most beautiful and best designed Halo game but also the least fun. Every weapon seems weak both in sound and damage and only head shots really count for much no matter the enemy type. Also, the A.I. is very aggressive and way too smart. They clearly know your exact position at every instant. Every level is designed more like a multiplayer arena rather than a realistic location with areas you can reasonably defend. All postions are flankable keeping you dashing around like you do in multiplayer. It's manic, it's precise, and it's not my thing at all. So we both quit out about 2/3rds the way through the 25 missions. I may go back solo to see if I can finish it. I hate not finishing games.

Then I was to play Halo 5 but the install was taking glacial years to complete so I played Minecraft. I played solo on survival with a medium sized map. I didn't expect much but I found myself in a very nice groove and got to the various goals I set myself really quickly. I was on a roll. When I stopped today (with Halo 5 at 80% complete), I had much of the resources needed to go for the "respawn the Enderdragon" achievement. Not all though. I still needed about 15 Ender Pearls and I was having trouble finding them near the end there. I'll find them though and maybe start going for the "Map Room" achievement at the same time. I have the first map complete. Now I'm trying to figure out if I can use multiple Nether Portals to zip around the 9 maps. Travel can be so time consuming in this game.

Finally, I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. I like these movies for their graphics and sailing ships. Their stories are usually trite but this one was a little more substantive. I think it's the best one so far.

That's two days worth. Sounds like a name Twodaysworth. Thadeus Twodaysworth. I'll make him the star of my new point-and-click adventure.

I really liked Carribean 2, largely cause of the music and playing up Jack Sparrow. Never got that into the first one and haven't had much desire to see the others for some reason.

I jumped on maybe the second or third movie. I like those sailing ships. Don't get that much in movies anymore. Last one I can think of was Master and Commander and that was a long time ago now.

I don't know if I'll go see the new Pirates of the Carribean movie.  They're getting to be like the Lord of the Rings movies to me.  Meaning I can't tell which one is which and I've forgotten the story anyway.

I don't go to them for the story, just those sailing ships. AND PIRATES! YAR!

As much as I like Disney, I was over Pirates after the second movie. It was fun watching the first flick, the second one was ok, but after that I was done with the franchise.

The top down Halo games I like but I haven't forced myself to sit and play. The last time I played one was on a flight home, and they are perfect on the iPad. In fact I'm going to redownload them to my iPad.

I just saw that the first movie was in 2003. Wow, that's a long time for a series. They're all pretty much the same to me - decent and visual feasts for the eyes.

I imagine they'd look great on iPad.

Yeah they look good, but it looks like the console version, the only difference is the touch controls on the bottom left and right of the screen.

I was a little annoyed at the aiming with the analog sticks. Seemed a bit clumsy to me.
