So, I was going to finish Halo 5, but I felt a little down, and so I played some Minecraft instead. I continued the world I'd started a few days ago and tried out some interesting things with Nether Portals to help me get the Map Room achievement. It was fun, but I can tell already that it is clearly not the fastest way to the goal.
Basically, this is what I did. I needed a fast way to get to the outlying mapable zones, so, knowing how the Nether relates to the Overworld in terms of coordinates, I built multiple portals in the Nether at specific distances so they would spawn new portals in the outlying areas. Once in an outlying area of the Overworld, I would take out two blank maps, activate them, and take one back to home base and put it in a frame at the right spot in the grid. Then I'd go back to the outlying area with my duplicate map and explore the new area to reveal everything. I did this for three areas, four maps total. It was quite interesting to dig tunnels at exact distances in the Nether and try and build portals at the end of them with ghasts blasting me at every moment.
Along the way I was collecting resources and hunting Endermen. I still needed 9 Ender Pearls to open the End Portal and maps cost a lot of paper and iron.
I think my subway system plan is really cool but the process would probably be quicker to just spend the time in the Overworld exploring. This is a tedious process however and I don't relish it. It was how Mark was doing it today. He got all 9 maps done but when he started to put them together in frames on the wall, he forgot which map went where. He shuffled them around a lot but couldn't get the right arrangement to unlock the achievement. I think I know how to fix his problem with a little bit of travel time, but he got really frustrated and took a break. We decided to team our efforts next time.
I'm not a fan of big tedious projects. I have to make it interesting even if that means it takes a little longer in the end. However, I do want to get this achievement done.
