I’m Done with Minecraft. Bring on RiME.

Over the week I completed my Ender Dragon Quest in Minecraft. Then I kept playing, sometimes on my own, sometimes with Mark, until I got really tired of it. Now I have my rental game, RiME, and will start that sometime this weekend.

My Ender Dragon quest was to go from zero resources to victory over the Ender Dragon in under 6 hours. I did it in just under 7. Not too bad. I thought about what would be neat to do afterwards and came to the conclusion that building a castle, specifically, a motte and bailey style castle. This is a very simple castle design. A “motte” is a mound and it’s where you build your tower, the castle proper. Then you put a wall around the town below. This is the “bailey”. Finally you make a ditch or moat around everything. What else would a dragon slayer do? He’s got the keys to the city for his valor, he might as well become a lord, maybe even king.

Further on from that, I thought I’d focus on the enchantement table and really make the most awesome set of equipment ever to totally dominate ever area of the game. This sounded like such a good idea, I thought I’d change my whole quest to be all about building and using the Enchantment table. I thought I’d call it Legendary Knight’s Quest.

So I started over. Mark was off doing his own thing in his world, so I went on alone. In about 4 hours or so, I got to the point of searching for the Stronghold, but by then I was getting really fatigued. It takes so long just to get to the really fun part where you’re powerful and have magically enhanced tools. That’s Minecraft though. Nothing is as quick as you think it will be in Survival Mode.

And now I have RiME in my hand from Gamefly. This is a beautiful cell-shaded puzzle adventure game in the tradition of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.  I’ll try and play tomorrow as long as the install doesn’t take all day.

Im waiting for the Switch verison of Rime. I did orginally plan to buy it on the PS4 but that changed. I do hope you enjoy it! Im currently playing Shantae Half Genie Hero on Switch and God Eater Burst and Persona 5 on PS4.

I rewatched the trailer for RiME and I'm excited.

Those are all great games. Such riches you are enjoying!

Damn. I think I know what I'm putting atop my GameFly list once I send Titanfall 2 back.

It's definitely in the spirit of games like Journey, Myst, and ICO.

I heard that it was originally supposed to be a RPG. I wonder if some devs start a big project like that and then get in over their head, or take too long on the project, and then pull back and say, "let's just make it an adventure puzzle game.", and get it out the door quicker.

Maybe.

I think Journey and ICO are pretty different, since I doubt ICO only lasts an hour and is almost on rails, but I think I understand what you mean.

Yea, not the same for sure but in the vein of open world exploration and figuring out something puzzling. If you play RiME there is a moment that looks almost exactly like Journey. Oh and there's no toppling giant robots, although. . . nuff said.

Yeah, I get what you mean now about the aesthetic and feel of it. I was thinking purely in terms of gameplay mechanics earlier.

Yea, I thought about that comparison to Journey and realized it was only very broadly related. There's some visual similarities and certainly the atmosphere but they're very different in gameplay.

Oh man!  I just beat RIME and wrote my review of it.  I wish I could talk about that game more with you, but I don't want too spoil too much.  It's not a perfect game, but it's still very beautiful and mesmerizing and clever.  When you beat it, you might want to have a tissue handy.

Ok then. I just started it and only a couple hours in. I haven't had any complaints as of yet. I'll try and avoid spoilers until I finish it.

Minecraft is some addictive shit.

It is. The other day I was just picking away at some blocks in a mine and suddenly thought, "what the heck am I doing?". It's those hidden rare elements that pop up every so often. It's enough to keep me digging like a mole.

Rime looks interesting, and I do like puzzle games. I should give it a try.

As something which will likely be on some excellent sale, I'd say get it then.
