RiME

I just got a handful of hours in today as I was out most of the day shooting photos with Mark. I played a bit of Minecraft as RiME installed, but it is only a 4GB game, so it installed quickly. Then I played it the rest of the time.

RiME is a 3D adventure puzzle game. Your character washes up on the beach of a mysterious island and you must figure out what’s going on with all these ruins. It reminded me of Myst right off the bat, probably because of the ruins and lack of intelligent life. You are the only human. Only a few animals are around. It’s a quiet game for the most part with gentle orchestral music in the background. It’s also very lonely. There’s only this magical fox and a strange figure in a red cloak that show up occasionally to tell you where to go. The game does not hold your hand, though. It gives only the subtlest of hints as to what to do. You just wander around and eventually you find objects you can interact with. Then you find some rooms that have puzzles to solve. I got frustrated a few times but not for long. I was able to navigate the game’s mysteries pretty quickly, so far.

The game is really beautiful. It is cell shaded and very detailed. The areas you are in are very large and you can explore quite a bit. There are clearly a few collectibles along the way but not a lot. I stumbled into a few of them. I’m trying not to explore every nook and cranny of the game. I’ve been largely following the fox like you might if you were really there. I have looked around a corner from time to time, though. I don’t like to play as a gamer my first time in a game. I kind of want the story to lead me a little more so I feel like I’m really experiencing it. Attacking a game, looking for things that you know will be achievements later, really distracts from the experience. I’ll do that on a second play-through, if I like the game enough.

So tomorrow I’ll probably play more of RiME. I’ve done 2 ½ hours so far. I don’t know how long it is but I’m guessing it can’t be much more than 8 or 10. I may even finish it tomorrow.

Rime seems cool.  It got kind of lackluster reviews, but I think that's the result of too much hype for it and it turning out to be just a good game rather than something dazzling. I wouldn't mind checking it out sometime...

The story works very well when you complete it and then think about all the events and what it all meant. I like that about it. You worry about survival and puzzles during the game and then do the deep thinking as the credits roll. Perfect process for a game, I think.

RIME's pretty short.  You'll be able to beat it fairly quickly.

Did it today in 5 1/2 hours. Then I went exploring for extras and am now at 10 hours.

I definitely just aim to beat the game as soon as possible the first time around. All the extra stuff is, to me, just that. Extra.

I love cel-shaded graphics.

It's been story first then exploration second for me. I'm actually getting into RiME even more in my round 2 exploration. I kind of didn't expect that.

Cell Shaded graphics is one of my favorite looks in games. We need more of it, and I do need to try this game out.

I think Crackdown 3 will have a cell shaded look. I can't wait for that one.
