Minecraft, Media '75 and Battlefield Bad Co. 2

Only at the very end of the evening did I play the opening levels of Battlefield Bad Company 2, but I feel like I can take a long break from Minecraft now.

The day started with Mark and I playing Minecraft on survival mode as if to get to The End. I got to the Nether, was very careful, and then just before I was about to hit level 30, I got killed. I recovered my gear and 8 of my levels, but that's a lot of levels to lose. I basically gave up trying to level up. It just takes too long and can be taken away from you at any time. So I had to figure out something to make the game interesting again.

While I was thinking, I went to youtube and watched a bunch of trailers for film and tv shows from 1975, the year I'm focusing on in music for September. Some examples are: SNL year one, Woody Allen's Love and Death (Rik Mayall, in his voice work for the game Hogs of War, did a character that was totally Woody Allen from this movie), Monty Python's Holy Grail, Welcome Back Kotter, Space 1999 (a personal favorite), Jaws (where the Sega arcade electro/mechanical game Killer Shark is shown in the trailer), Tommy the movie (the trailer shows some Gottleib pinball games: Kings & Queens and Buckaroo), Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla and Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I finally joined Mark again in one of his new seeds. I dyed sheep yellow and made yellow carpet, bed sheets and a couch out of their wool. That was some dumb fun. Then I tried, on several other seeds, to get to the Nether in as quick a way as possible. It's fun to find shortcuts to do this. Then I tamed two parrots and watched them follow me around. Finally, Mark and I entered creative mode and started creating mayhem. We burned two Mansions to the ground and terrorized a witch's hut. Actually, we blew it up. Whoopie!

Then, as I was about to leave, I played the first few areas in Battlefield Bad Company 2. This game gets right to the action with no opening cutscene. Only a little text introduces you to the setting and historic mission in the Pacific theater of WWII. Right away it felt like a classic corridor FPS like Medal of Honor. Yes! It's fun to revisit old styles of gameplay from time to time.

I continue to be surprised that you're still playing Minecraft but I guess it's, like, the most played game today for a reason*

*I have no idea if this is true but I'd totally believe it.

I recently looked at the most played games on XBO and it was still in the top ten. I'm amazed that GTA V is like number 2 or something still. It's still on the top ten sales charts for this month too.

I'm amazed I'm still playing Minecraft as well. It tends to make me think games are dead or something because it's so open ended and most games feel constrained to me now.
