Namco, Forza, Etrian Odyssey

Two days ago, I set up my Wii to play 1979 games on Namco Museum's Megamix. Then I played Forza Horizon 3 a good long time. Then yesterday I put a little time into Etrian Odyssey V while I did wash at a laundramat.

I set up my Wii for the first time in a long time. I checked the store and it looked like I could still download titles, even though I'd heard it was shut down. Maybe any day now. I put in Namco Museum Megamix which I found at a Gamestop kind of out of my usual stomping ground. Everyone had Namco Museum Remix which is the same but with less games. The Megamix adds nine original arcade games and one more remixed one. I had to have it 'cause. . . more's better.

So I played Galaxian again and found the Wiimote and nunchuck actually more confortable to use than a standard controller. Strange, but that's how I felt. I think maybe seperating the hands onto two different controllers somehow gave me more skill. Anyway, I played this game better and with more confidence than on the Xbox with its standard controller. I played until I got past 10k points.

Then I played Cutie Q. This is the sequel to Namco's first game Gee Bee. Both games were designed by Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani. Cutie Q is a pinball game but instead of flippers you have paddles. There are also breakable bricks at the top of the screen like in Breakout. That's a great combination! I wonder why no one else has done it? I liked it but it didn't sustain my interest for very long.

Then it was back to Xbox One and Forza Horizon 3. I played this most of the rest of the day. Mark was playing it too. I eventually found myself using the achievement list to guide me. I needed some direction because the map was getting so busy with events. First, I went after leveling my festivals ten times. Along the way, I was adding to my number of found and destroyed signs, discovering new roads and barn finds. I also did the car auction for the first time. This was really fun. I looked for classic Dodge's and bid on them until I won. I got a thing for Dodge muscle cars. The auction uses in-game credits, not real money. I keep seeing the Hot Wheels cars of the DLC and wish I could get them. Real life cars are fine, but fantasy ones are even better. I want to drive a car with an impossibly large engine.

Then yesterday I finally managed to put some time into my 3DS. I ran a bunch of Miis through the gauntlet of Mii Plaza games and then played Etrian Odyssey V while doing wash. I'm on level 5 of the first Stratum and nearly ready for Stratum 2. I'm about 16 hours into the game. I spent skill points on defense for all my characters this time because I almost got party wiped in a multi wave battle. I use a Hawk and several Wraiths in the front line but they rarely take the damage first. Wraiths are good for blowing up in enemy's faces though. I'm enjoying it but finding time to play is a problem.

I just got Okami HD in the mail on rental. So I'll probably start that next game day, which might be Tuesday.

I gotta get going with it. At this rate I'll won't finish it before the next great 3DS game comes out.

Okami HD is one I'd like to play. I got stuck in Okamiden on DS at some point.

I have both Namco Museum Remix and Megamix, because I am a freak.  If DLC add-ons were a thing on the Wii, Megamix would've been one of those.

Lots of other arcade companies did the whole Breakout/Pinball hybrid combination for a while, it's just that Namco's sitll one of the only ones around to talk about it.

There was a pinball game on PS2 called Flipnic, and it had a mode that played a lot like Gee Bee/Bomb Bee/Cutie Q.

Seriously, look up Q Taro if you want to see what inspired Toru Iwatani to create games like Cute Q and Pac-Man.

I'm thinking of getting a Xbox version of Taito Legends 2 so I can have Namco, Midway, Capcom, and Taito collections all in one place. I'm going to need them this year as I revisit stuff from the 80s.

I guess I just missed those mashups. Great idea.

The Little Ghost in Q Taro does seem like the ghosts in Pac-Man.

I want the Namco Museum Megamix. I have the standard remix but that's it. I love classic collections. Forza Horizon 3 is amazing. I really don't know how their going to top it with part 4.

Megamix has Grobda and a remix of it. That's kind of a cool sequel to Xevious. Not the same game at all though. Megamix was cheap, like $10.

I've been already speculating where they're going to set the next game. South America? Europe? China? I'm kind of partial to China. I'd like to see the landscape and roads there.
