Wherein I am questioned at length about my involvement in an Oahu crime syndicate by Magnum, a private investigator, during a game of Battlezone at the King Kamehamela Club.

So Moki tells me he sees you here with members of a crime syndicate. Not now Magnum, I'm playing Battlezone. And furthermore, that's not true.
Moki doesn't miss much. Are you sure? Yea Magnum. Now let me tell you about this military sim. You should like this, being an ex-Navy SEAL. It was made to teach tactics with the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. You drive this armored vehicle in the game with these two joy sticks that control the treads. You shoot with this button on the stick. You move through the vector graphics environment using objects for cover and hunt tanks. Yea, there are a few UFOs in there. That was added to sell it as a game. But it's mostly still the combat sim.
Alright, you got me interested. Let me give it a go. Sure Magnum. Take over.
I ducked out of there fast and jumped on a chopper at Island Hoppers to get back to my time machine I left on the main island. It always seems that I come under suspicion very quickly when I time travel. Somehow people know I don't belong. Maybe I should leave my 3DS behind next time.
At home in 2018, I got out the Original Xbox and played Battlezone on Atari Anthology. You can play it on Game Room on Xbox 360, but I never bought it there and, now that the server is down, you can't buy it anymore. The easiest way is to play it in a browser here. I tested it and it works. Use "Z" to shoot.
Atari Anthology is pretty cool though. By playing various games in the collection you unlock special modes for each game. I had the extra modes unlocked for Battlezone and so played them all through once: one speeds up the game, another has a blurring effect, another has a time limit and another challenges you across three other games where you play a minute of each in rotation until you die or score enough points, I wasn't sure which.
Battlezone plays just fine on a modern controller. Each analog stick is just like the orignal controls. You pull one back and another forward to turn.

I was never super keen on the game when I was 13 and in the arcade, but I was thrilled to try it the first time because it was one of the few 3D-style games.
