Fishing Derby is another Activision game for the Atari 2600 that I played on Activision Anthology for PS2.

It is a very simple one or two player game. It's most fun as a two-player game but you can play against the computer as well. Each player sits on a dock on either side of the screen with a fishing rod. You use the joystick to lower and direct your line until you hook a fish by touching it near the mouth. Then the line reels in slowly on its own. Pressing the button reels it in faster. There's a shark near the surface that will try and eat your fish, so watch out. The object is to get to 99lbs first. The lower down the fish, the heavier it is and the slower it will reel in.

Fishing Derby plays just great on the PS2. It's not a long player though unless you have a friend to play with.

I love the design of these Activision games: colorful and minimalist, like an abstract painting.

To think fishing mini games used to just be the game.

Yea, right. It's kind of like how I realized one day why there wasn't a Pokemon Snap sequel. Photography gameplay is just a feature now in many games.

Yeah, but there's no game to those photography features like there was in Pokemon Snap. I'd still buy a photography game where there were certain things you had to photograph or certain ways you had to take the picture.

Last one I remember was Afrika for PS3. I'd still like to try that one.

I sitll think they should make a sequel to Pokemon Snap.

Yeah. They totally should. I'd be on that like a shark on a surfer.

Did you know it was Fishing Derby that coined the term, "The Shark Element" regarding challenge in games.  It's like a challenge you make yourself.  Risk vs. reward. Do you go for the small fish or get the bigger point fish and risk losing it to the shark?

Ha! Cool. I never knew that. "The Shark Element". I'll have to use that in my weekly trash talk with Mark.

I think I could live without playing this.

Most of the stuff from this time makes me think the same way. Except maybe for Stampede. I realy like that one.

You know I would play this. This would be perfect for a phone, play a couple of minutes, have a friends list leaderboard, heck even keep the graphics.

I can see this on a phone with maybe a few more features. Would be great.
