I've been thinking of picking up Etrian Odyssey but I'm also considering something different and getting Monster Hunter Stories.
My 2017 Must-Play Games

I recently made a list of current gen games and rated them based on how excited I was for them. Five stars was a "must play" game; four stars said, "I really want to play it"; three stars just, "want to play it"; and two stars was a, "curious". There was no need to list one star games. You could say those were all the rest. So here is a list of my five star games for 2017 in chronological order.
Halo Wars 2: I loved the first Halo Wars and even it this wasn't by Ensemble Studios, I had to get it. You don't get a good RTS on console too often. Well, I finished it but there was a glitch that kept me from getting the achievements in the last couple levels. At some point I'll go back and see if they fixed that.
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition: I didn't get strongly into the game the first time around, Mark was a much bigger fan of it, but when Gearbox's Randy Pitchford announced that Duke Nukem would be a character, I had to check that out. His voice work was funny, but there wasn't much else different. Somehow, I got more into the game this time around, and made a stab at getting 100% completion. Also, the rest of the voice work really made me laugh this time. It's so over-the-top silly. Mark and I are still repeating lines from the game.
Shadow Warrior 2: I still need to pick this up. Mark and I played the late 90s game this series started with and we both really liked it. I still need to play the remake too. What's the matter with me?
Valkyria Revolution: I was excited for anything Valkyria Chronicles related and so got this. It's not the strategy game I was looking for. It didnt' even look as good as the first one. I guess I'll try and forget this one when Valkyria Chronicles 4 comes out later this year.
Fable Fortune: Anything Fable. I was a little nervous this might not be good. A card game? So I've been waiting for a sale. It's down to $12 but under $10 is where I'm going to bite.
Hey Pikmin!: I got this and played most of it. I think I might get it again because you can play in short bursts, and that's maybe the only way I'm going to get time on my 3DS right now. Anything Pikmin. I'm on it.
Patapon Remastered: Anything Patapon. Even though I'm terrible at this game. I can nail the rhythm but sometimes it's not clear exactly when to hit the beat. I'll make another go at it sometime. I love the concept of a 2D RTS with a rhythm game battle system. Plus those graphics are to die for.
Agents of Mayhem: Ever since Volition's Saints Row Gat Out of Hell, I've been really excited by whatever they do. This promises to be a zany Crackdown with Archer-like humor. I've played a half dozen hours of it so far and it's pretty good. I need some more time with it to really be settled with what I feel about it.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle: Um, XCOM meets Mario, meets Rabbids? Weird, but XCOM makes me drool, so I'm in. Too bad I don't have a Switch yet. I'm thinking of getting the game first for when I do.
Pinball FX3: I've been playing these tables since the first iteration on Xbox 360. It's only gotten better. And now there's tournaments and challenges. I can't say no.
Culdcept Revolt: Anything Culdcept. It's just like all the others, just new battle boards and story. There's supposed to be some new cards, but I stopped playing because I really dislike the AI in this series. It seems to manipulate dice rolls in place of some kind of true AI, and I'm not down with that. I think I might get it again though. How can I do without some Culdcept? Monopoly meets Magic the Gathering? A match made in nerd heaven.
Etrian Odyssey V: It's been in my 3DS for half a year now and I've only logged about 15 hours. I just can't get enough time with handheld gaming right now. Also, it's kind of hard to play this in short bursts. I want to play a whole hour at least when I load it up. This is like my modern day Wizardry game. A turn-based first-person dungeon crawl is just what I want on a handheld.
Wolfenstein II: I played the demo and then watched Mark play it. Oh my! The things that happen in this game. Frickin' brilliant, and sometimes distrubing, but oh so good. I can't wait to get my paws on the fast action FPS gameplay. Too bad Gamefly seems to think I'd rather have other titles first. Well, I'll own this thing at some point. When it's like $20.
Earth Defence Force 4.1: Wing Diver The Shooter: Anything EDF. I know this isn't typical EDF gameplay but I have to see everything Sandlot puts out in NA. Unfortuneately, I can't find it on PS4 anymore. I wonder what happened?
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Stuff I had to see before anything else. There's so much more on my "want to play really badly" list. I probably won't get to it all unless I did nothing but game every day. Hum. . .
