I watched Star Trek The Motion Picture (1979) today, played a whole ton of Letter Quest and then checked out the Spring sale on Xbox today.

Star Trek The Motion Picture: I saw this in the theater way back when I was a kid in '79. It was a very impressive special effects extravaganza for the time. The remaster on DVD still looks good even today. I think the story is very good too. Much better, and more thoughtful, than any of the recent Star Trek movies. It's the original series cast back together again on a new mission to stop a hyper advanced alien object moving towards earth. I was really gripped by the story, much more than I expected. I wanted to make wise cracks the whole time, and I did, but I found myself paying attention more often than not.

Letter Quest: Could not stop playing this, Mark and I, most of the day. Achievements popping like popcorn. There is much more game here than I expected. Both Mark and I are into writing and such, and so we never tired of finding new words in the grid. There's leveling up, equipment and special challenges in this game, so it was never boring. I think though, that after this, I'll play it in shorter bursts, using it as my backup game, or a game that I play between other games, or while a game is installing.

Spring Sale: Xbox dropped their Spring sale by the end of the day today. I quickly looked through the games and found some good ones for cheap that I'll probably get tomorrow. Batman Return to Arkham for $15 (that's two games in one), Just Cause 3 for under $10, Thimbleweek Park for $10, and some X360 games that I'll have to check the prices because they don't show until you sign in to the X360 emulator. Oh, and I did buy the Porsche pack for Forza Horizon 2 for $2. Oh yes. I'm going to have a ball picking up some games tomorrow.

That's a day.

I never could get into Star Trek.  Although I did name a cat I had as a kid after a Star Trek character.  When I was a kid we had a Russian Blue cat, and I wanted to give it a Russian name.  But I was a little kid and didn't know any Russian names.  So my dad suggested Chekov, after the guy on Star Trek.  So that was his name!  I loved that cat.  He was super smart, too.  I taught him how to play fetch, open doors, and even use the toilet!  Yes, really.  That cat is what I always think of when Star Trek comes to mind.

My college roommate was really into Star Trek so I had to sit through a lot of it with him.  There are only two of the Star Trek movies I kind of liked.  The fourth one because it was silly, and First Contact because I'm not sure why.

I did go see Pacific Rim Uprising last night.  It was a lot of fun, but I think I still liked the first one better.

I noticed Guiermo Del Torro was just producer on this one and not directing. I think he directed the first one. I think it's a better story, Uprising, but it's less exciting, and that's sort of what I want from that movie. I want a big dumb monster movie like all those Godzilla films.

I think I've seen all the Star Trek films, I really like the one where they go back in time for the whales.

Gotta love sales especially when the games are cheap. I also picked up some games last week from the Nintendo sale.

I was so tempted by Just Cause 3. $12 for the game and all the DLC. Can't beat that. I'm going to get it physical though. I just want that one for the shelf.

I love those old Star Trek movies. So good. I've watched them tons of times, and I even think I was dragged to the first one when I was really young cause I have memories of it in the theater.

My favorite is Star Trek V, when Spock's half brother searches for "God", but I think, objectively, the best is definitely Khan. Hard to go wrong with that movie. After the fifth one I don't like them so much, the sixth wasn't so good, and then came the next generation. I loved the series but not the movies.

The movies kind of trailed off for me after Wrath of Khan. I love they all tackle difficult subjects. That's Rodenberry for sure. The ones today are way too safe and shallow.

Wrath of Khan (II) and The Voyage Home (IV) are my favorites. I really haven't liked any of them since Generations. The new ones are lacking what made Star Trek special, and are just run-of-the-mill action movies.

Yea, it's too bad. Star Trek used to have a great message about the future of human society.
