Saw this movie today and really liked it. I was afraid it would be drowned by nerd pop culture references, like the book seemed to at times, but I think Spielberg saved it from that and made a really engaging story with strong characters.

There were some changes from the book. One of them was kind of major, but I think the change made for a better movie. I wasn't bothered by it at all. If you read the book, you'd know what I mean. I won't spoil it.

As to video game references, there are a ton, probably some that I missed too because they went by too fast or were behind the action. Stuff to notice on a second watching for sure. Movie references abound as well. The list would be a long one. It was all handled very well, either for comedy, or as integral part of the story. None of it seemed too gratuitous like I feared.

Overall this was a good popcorn flick worth seeing in the theater for its spectacle and just all round good fun.

It seems weird Spielberg would make this cause you'd think he wouldn't get all those references cause of his age, but... who knows?

Well, I thought it was perfect for him because he became so megafamous in the 80s. I'm sure it's a favorite time for him.

And by the way, I forgot to mention all the music references. One in particular has to do with the first Joy Division album which I just got a day before I saw the movie, and so got the reference. Weird coincidence there.

You know what's weird is that I have no interest in this movie, but I'm totally going to see the Rampage movie even though it looks awful.  I'm going to force my brother Jeff to watch it with me (he's OK with it), because we have a history with the game.  I guess I just have horrible tastes in movies.

Well, Rampage might be good. It's so hard to tell from trailers.

I haven't seen the movie but I did read the book and while I don't think it's written very well, it is definitely a fun story that keeps moving. With a less competent director, this movie probably would have been trash but I'm glad to hear it turned out well.

Ernest Cline was a screenwriter first and his book reads like one. I just found it went overkill on the pop culture references but maybe he was hedging all his bets in case a movie deal happened and he'd have to find licenses they could afford to use in the film. I noticed he was co-writer on the screenplay and co-producer as well. He made sure he got his money on this one. It also gives him a little more credit for how well the movie turned out.

That's what I like about watching the movie and then reading the book. The book becomes a whole new version of the story. I should check out the book.

The book was fun. I read Armada too. The next one. That one was like Ender's Game.
