I started getting obsessed with this list of games I can play on XBO and PS4. Through various free giveaways and backward compatibility, I have a lot of choices. So I looked up all their play times and listed them from shortest to longest. Part of doing this is to compete on the achievement leaderboards, if possible; but it's also to knock a bunch of stuff off my immense backlog list.
Not part of the backlog really, just retro, but I started with Rare Replay and Midway Arcade Origins to go with my 80'-84' look back this month. Jet Pack is a darn good game. Fixed screen action shooter. You have to build your ship and fuel it for launch while aliens try and stop you. You have a gun and there are a few platforms to land on. I played it for a while but didn't unlock anything in Rare Replay. Guess I got to get better at it. Also played the other 80-84 games they made. I liked Lunar Jetman but the enemies are all over the place, very annoying.
I played a bunch of stuff on Midway Arcade Origins most notably Sinistar. I love this game but I can never collect enough sinibombs to defeat Sinistar. You have to shoot asteroids until they drop bombs you can pick up but it's hard to get them, they are so tiny and your ship moves fast as lighting. Not as fast as Sinistar when he comes for you though. Graaahhh!
Then I played some Crazy Taxi. I can see where Burnout might have learned something from this game. You get money bonuses for near missing other vehicles and executing jumps and such. Very fun game. I loved getting to each destination as fast a possible. I can't figure out how to get the boost and drift moves to work consistantly. You have to switch into reverse, hear the engine rev and then switch back. I just can't get it. So all the bonus missions eluded me. If only it controlled as well as Cars 2.
I finished with Bolt. Not a bad game at all. I've been wanting to play it ever since I tried the demo something like ten years ago. The Bolt (dog) segments are what I like best. He's the brawler and what I recognized I would like in the demo. Penny is the other half of the team and she does stealth, platforming and puzzles. Both gave me their challenges late in the game. I'll tell you, I was swearing like a sailor, but I made it. Then I mopped up a few of the collectibles and called it a day. Didn't get 100%, but I didn't want to search every level again.
I finished up with Cars 2 as well. I played through all the races several times going for gold on each one. I got gold on about half of them. There are probably 40 races in the game. It's a really solid game. Controls are perfect. There's actually quite a bit of challenge in the later events. Lots of achievements for doing special things during races, either with stunts or with things in the environment. i got a little tired of it though eventually. i want to look up Cars 3 and give that a try.
I started Brave: The Video Game while I was waiting for some other games to install. i think I'll be playing Brave for a while now though because in the first hour it's pretty solid. Isometric view arrow shooting and sword fighting. Reminded me of Baldur's Gate a little bit. I'm going to finish it, i can tell. I like the graphics too even though the cutscenes are mostly still shots with text and voice over. Still, really attractive drawing and almost a watercolor style to it. Very cool.
Well, I made up my list for the near future and it's pretty long and includes some of the newly added original xbox back compatible games. I've got my PS4 stuff on the list but most of them are kind of long players, so are down the list aways. Too bad PS didn't go back compat like previous systems. I'd have a lot more to play there right now.
