May Retro

I like to dabble in some retro every month. May will be the years '85-'89. These are still the arcade years but it's also about the NES.

First I'm going to get out Midway Arcade Origins to play some Gauntlet. Then Capcom Arcade Cabinet, which is a digital store front on XBO (and probably PS4), for 1943: Battle of Midway. I'll also play anything in those collections that came out '85-'89. Which reminds me of Rare Replay and the stuff they made for ZX Spectrum, C64 and NES like R.C. Pro-Am. I'm also going to get Twin Bee on 3DS. They've added a 3D effect to it just like Xevious. I wish I could play the original arcade port of Sky Shark (and I could if I wanted to use my PC) but I'll have to settle for the not very great NES port instead.

And speaking of NES. I'm going to break that out and play through all the carts I have. Some are mine and others are ones Mark gave me last year. I want to weed out the ones I don't want to cut my collection down a bit.

Then I'll get back to my more current stuff. I've got Neir Automata from the library and my short games list to work through. Should be fun.

Oh, and other media. I'm going to read Batman Year One and Batman Killing Joke, some William Gibson novels and a book about Richard Feynman. Then there'll be some movies. I'm still making the list but I want to see King Solomon's Mines and maybe Highlander. I've see Highlander many times but it's been a while.

Then there's music. I'm still doing the list but so far there are a lot of metal albums I'm interested in hearing like Slayer's Hell Awaits and Kreator's Endless Pain. I'll see what I can get a hold of though.

On the NES you gotta play games like Mega Man and Capcom's Disney stuff like DuckTales!  A late 80's double whammy!

So I have Mega Man on Wii and in a collection for original Xbox. Ooo! I just realized that I saw a Mega Man collection in the Game Pass stuff today on Xbox One. I know what I'm downloading tomorrow.

Duck Tales I don't have though. But then again, I think I might have seen that collection in Game Pass as well. I'll look for that tomorrow. Maybe I can do just as you say after all.

You can play DuckTales on The Disney Afternoon Collection.  It's great.

I looked it up and it wasn't on Game Pass; although, Mega Man Legacy Collection was.

You're not the first person I've heard talk about getting games from the library but I've yet to come across a library myself that actually has games Frown

I've been on a great streak with novels this year. Last month I read Snow Crash, which wouldn't fit into your theme because it was published in '92, but it's a foundational cyberpunk work akin to Neuromancer (though those two books are still pretty different). Good stuff!

The ones in my area are now carrying current releases, not just older stuff. It's kind of great too because now that I work for the library, abiet part time, I get rentals for free. They're still only $1.50 anyway for a week.

When I read Snow Crash, I was deliverying pizza. The opening chapters made me laugh as Hero Protagonist cut through people's lawns to get there on time. I liked the fact that he never left his car too. He'd pick up the pizza delivery at a drive through window. Wish they had that.

The early 90s was when Domino's had their 30 minutes or less policy. Thank god I never worked there during that. Terrible idea. Dangerous.
