I dug into this today and I think I love it. 

You can totally play single player, or you can invite friends into the game to help out. It's not a wild MMO style game where teams of people are griefing you constantly like in that similar survival game Rust. I'm super happy about that. I'm managing my community and keeping the zombies in check. It's real fun. 

I'm playing this through Game Pass so I really don't own it. I don't know how long it will be made available there, but I imagine at least through June since it just came out. 

Today I found a house and set up my team there. Then I went out and searched for resources, sometimes with one of my team. You can switch characters by talking to them or just ask them to follow you on an outing.

I fought a lot of zombies. The battle system works great. It's in third-person and your equipment breaks after a lot of use. I still haven't figured out how to craft things, but I think I have to build a workbench at my base. I managed to build an infirmary to save a few people from the zombie plague. You can catch the plague from certain types of zombies if they damage you a lot. Then you have to hunt for medical supplies to create the antidote. 

There's a day-night cycle and I found myself fighting and hunting around at night a lot. It made for a really tense and exciting outing. I'd see a zombie under a street lamp and sneak around it so I could jump it from behind and get an execution kill. 

There are different types of zombies, the worst so far are the screamers, who, if you don't get them quick, will scream and bring in a lot more zombies. Usually you are fighting one or two but sometimes you find an infestation and have to fight a large group. Then, sometimes, a group of them attacks your base and you have to fend them off; or just let your community do it. Just make sure they have the right equipment for the job. 

I also found a van and fixed it up, brought it to my base, and now I use it to get around and store more resources on my outlings. You can upgrade it to make it a zombie killing machine. I don't have the resources for that yet, but I'm soooo into that.
