PS2 Retro and XBO

I tried to get a good sense of what to keep from 4 PS2 titles. Then I finished up Banner Saga 2 and got hooked some more in Kingdom: New Lands on XBO.

Duel Masters: I think this was the sequel to Yu-Gi-Oh!. It’s a battle card game like Magic. It works really well on PS2. You conjure creatures that perform animations in the middle of the playfield on every attack. It didn’t take long to learn it. I played the tutorials and the first battle in Campaign mode. It was cool, but I’d still rather play Culdcept which adds a board game mechanic.

Klonoa 2: I really like this series. It’s probably my favorite platformer. This sequel has great music and looks pretty good. The gameplay isn’t greatly challenging but it’s still interesting. I got stuck, though, on one of the puzzle rooms they throw at you. You have to hit three targets in a certain order and in a certain amount of time while you use your platforming skills. I couldn’t figure out what the proper order was. They all seemed to stop very quickly. Next time I’ll take another crack at it. I’m keeping this one.

Nightshade: This is a third-person brawler that seems like cyberpunk like Ghost in the Shell. You begin, without any instruction about controls, standing on the top of a flying wing. Enemies attack you out of nowhere and I had to figure out the controls on the fly. A boss appeared and I got myself killed. This game is stylish, I’ll give it that, but tell me what does what.

Rygar Legendary Adventure: This is the God of War style game, not Maximo, that I mentioned in the previous blog. I was liking it until the first boss and discovered how slow my character’s recovery time is every time he attacks with his chain/shield. It was quite frustrating.

That was retro for the day. Back to the present.

Banner Saga 2: I did exactly what I did with Banner Saga 1. I got a game over screen on the very last battle. I guess I still haven’t figured out who and how to level properly. I’ll go back to these games sometime and focus on just a couple of characters rather than the complete 6 member team.

Kingdom: New Lands: I got past the first land. You find a ruined ship and can restore it. The game doesn’t tell you this is your objective. I found out by accident, but when you build the ship and move it to the docks, you win, and move on to a new land. On the new land you can upgrade you fort into a keep and create knights. I discovered it is wise to create a lot of archers because, as long as they aren’t put in towers, they hunt and gain you much needed gold for upgrades and repairs. I really love this game.

Well, that’s a week. Next week I’ll be breaking out the original Xbox for retro play. I got to move a bunch of games that probably aren’t great on that system as well.

I remember playing Rygar on PS2 and it came with the NES game on the disc, which was apparently a cult classic. I wasn't that into it, but the PS2 game was an ok rental.

I was really getting into it until I realized how slow I was in boss battles. I suppose I could've persisted but I've got a lot of games to test. Something's really got to grab me to keep me in there.

Klonoa 2 is one of my favorites and one of the best on the PS2.  Not as good as the first game, but definitely a keeper.

I think NIghtshade is a spinoff game from the 3-D Shinobi titles.  Nightshade stars a female ninja, so I guess that's cool.

Rygar on the PS2 made me think of Rampage since you could break columns and buildings with that yo-yo thing.

I liked the way you get wildly different views sometimes when navigating platforms in Klonoa 2. You go super high and see the ground below you and stuff like that. Also, those board riding segments weren't bad. What chiefly gets me is the look and sound of the game.

Yea, she's a ninja in Nightshade but there's high tech stuff going on too. It wasn't bad, I just wish it gave you a brief tutorial.

I liked the destructible environments in Rygar and the movement was pretty smooth. I just had trouble with that first boss. I needed to attack and then jump really quickly but I had to wait for that shield to reel back in on that chain.

Hey I have a couple of these games. Klonoa 2 was my first Klonoa game. I liked it but I don't think I ever finished it. I kinda liked Nightshade but at times I got frustrated with the gameplay. I know I own Rygar but I don't think I ever put any real time into it. I think by the time I bought it, I was just buying PS2 games to add to the library.

I got all these for cheap out of curiosity back when PS2 games were on sale at Gamestop years ago. I'm trying to trim the library now.

A lot of the earlier PS2 games still had manuals that told you what did what. I miss manuals, because I could sit and figure out how to do stuff before I even fired up the game.

I used to like manuals too but now I look at them like they're strange artifacts of a long ago civilization. I joke with Mark about that sayings, "what is this thing?". Honestly, I've gotten a little spoiled by modern games. I scoff at manuals, "I have to read something?"; although, I like them for artistic reasons still. I want little art books in my game packaging now.
