Clayfighter Sculptor's Cut Sells for Big Money

My friend and I decided a few months ago to sell our copies of Clayfighter 63 1/3: Sculptor's Cut.

The game was a Blockbuster exclusive way back in '98, or so. Later, I vaguely remember picking it up at Blockbuster on some sale. I definitely didn't pay full price for it new. I'm not sure how my friend got a copy back then, but he didn't spend much either. Neither of us knew it was rare or special in any way. I liked Claymation and my friend liked Animaniacs and most of the voices in the game are done by people on that show. Now it's like the rarest N64 game in its library.

The difference between the regular Clayfighter 63 1/3 and Scuptor's Cut is that It has a few more characters to unlock and a full song at the beginning. I really like the game, especially all its silly one-liners during fights that parody all sorts of pop culture stuff, but it's time to move on.

So Mark put his up on ebay the other week - just the loose cart, not complete in box at all - and it sold for over $300! I still can't believe it. My copy is going next.

Yea. Just about any old game, if it's complete and still sealed, will go for a lot of money but a loose cart? I'm tempted to keep it longer. The value will just keep going up, I think.

Yeah, I saw where the price has gone up. I think the market is a little inflated right on the SNES and N64 carts. I mean it’s not like Snow Bros or Stadium Events. Those games are really rare. They once considered Clay Fighters common when the big sale off of games at B.B. happened. If you want to sale it for profit I would do it now.

That could be Nintendo Switch money!  Money Mouth

Believe me, that was one of my first thoughts, but seeing as I'm still not fully employed, I think I'll have to save it for now. Cry

Well, I'm glad to hear that. It wasn't planned at all. I'm just going through some culling of the herd right now.

CIB sealed should bring a bit more. Finding a buyer will be the thing. If you do decide to sale I wish the best for you.

It's a lot more in the box or sealed. Last time I look stuff up like this, the CIB version was always at least 3 times the value of the loose cart.

Dammit. I rented that as a kid; should have bought it.

I always had it around because I liked it. Then when I started hearing it was rare, I was surprised but not willing to part with it for what was, maybe back in 2009, $50 for the loose cart. I can't believe how much it's increased since then.

I kind of want to still keep it, but I've been losing my attachment to the games I have before 2000. It's weird but I just am.

I bought mine used from Blockbuster eons ago. Sold it 3 years ago for $100 CAD.

Nice. Sometimes you can get a little of that entertainment money back.

I played the SNES ClayFighter games, but not the N64 one.  I wish I would have!  You can give me your copy. :)

The regular 63 1/3 is nearly the same and a whole lot cheaper. I kind of don't want to let it go, to be real, but I've discovered something about my nostalgia. It only goes back so many years. I'm thinking about 15 or 20. Anything before 1998 right now doesn't interest me in terms of collecting. I still want to play some of that stuff. I just don't need hard copies anymore.

Actually there was quite a bit that was different.

Differences from 63 1/3

  • Killer Instinct-based combo system removed, including the removal of Insane Combos and Combo Breakers.
  • New menus.
  • Four new characters.
  • Intro sequence added.
  • Much of the special moves removed from characters.
  • Blob's stage changed from Grotto Gulch to the Refuse Room.
  • New voiceclips added for some characters.
  • Some claytalities removed, with others having new commands.
  • New story mode. Instead of fighting Dr. Kiln at the end, each character fights their rival.
  • Earthworm Jim is now an unlockable character, while Dr. Kiln is a starter character.
  • Ickybod Clay's supers updated.
  • 3D scrolling removed to make breakthroughs easier.

Ok, cool. I think I never actually played the original, just Sculptor's Cut. Ha ha.

I remember one of the Clayfighters being expensive which is why I used to love digging through Blockbuster's sale bin. I never found one but I did find some stuff for N64 and a random longbox Playstation game that is apparently rare. Congrats to Mark, and I hope you can get as much for your cart as well.

His went for $320 total. I used to scrounge the Blockbuster sale bins too. I never knew what I was looking for, just something interesting and cheap.
