I broke out the Wii and played a few games over the last few days. Then I attempted to get to the End Dragon again in Minecraft, and failed. Here's a picture of my Wii.
I like the WIi. It seems a very stable and sturdy piece of hardware. There's no drawer to break like with my OG Xbox. Also, I like the immediacy of putting in a game and having it come right up - no installs to wait for. I'm beginning to think Nintendo has it right with a game system. For a second I thought about trading in all my systems for a Switch. It's not a terrible idea.
I played Fortune Street. This is indeed very much like Monopoly. It's not exactly Monopoly though, so some of the rules are a little different. All the properties are stores instead of buildings you rent out. The paths float above a location from Mario or Dragon Quest. This reminds me strongly of the Culdcept series which does the same thing. There are also mini-games at a specific spot on the path unique to the set of boards for Mario or Dragon Quest. There's a bunch of locations you can choose from in each world and new ones open up eventually. I didn't play long enough to unlock anything other than medals and some points you use to buy clothes and behaviors for you Mii. I really didn't want to stop playing. I put the game in my permanent collection while I check out other questionable games in my collection.
And speaking of which was Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn. I played this several hours and boy is this staying in the collection. Turn-based strategy? Yes please. There's quite a lot of text dialog in between battles to tell the story and introduce the characters - maybe too much. It really slows the game down a lot. I enjoyed it though. You can do a lot of things I did in more recent Fire Emblem games like develop relationships between characters that end up helping you in battle. I'm really keen to see the horse mounted characters and possibly use other medieval war machines; although, I think it sticks to hand-to-hand style combat. I also had to pull myself away from this to get to make progress with my stack of shame. It's in the permanent collection now though, so I'll get back to it.
I played a healthy dose of Minecraft (maybe unhealthy) because it finally totally exhausted me. Yesterday I got killed by an Enderman because it caught me with my pants down. Ha! Not exactly but I had on half a suit of armor and only a stone sword. I thought I could take him but those guys teleport and do some severe damage.
Ah, well, I started a new world with the aim of targeting those guys. Of course, I found few of them and got distracted with exploration. I built one base, then another, and then another. I couldn't find the Fortress in the Nether with the portal at my first base, so I traveled far away and set up another one. I thought I was far enough away, but I wasn't and beamed right to the same portal in the Nether. Then coming back through the portal from the Nether, I got sent to my first base, a long way from the one I wanted to be at. I hate that you can't return to the portal you want to in the Overworld. I was so annoyed at the prospect of moving a lot of matterials from one base to another, two and half map lengths away, that I just stopped. I don't think I'll play Minecraft for a while now. It's just too much work to get the stuff you need for the End Dragon. It used to be less work, but the new updates have made the world larger and the resources a little more scarce. It was time for a break anyway.
I decided to go after achievements. I like the leaderboards where you can compete with your friends in a given month. I'm low down for September but I'll catch up. I started Lego Star Wars III: Clone Wars to begin my achievement hoarding.
These Lego games look so darn good. I mean, it's cartoony Lego stuff, but they copy the movies they take from so closely - frame for frame in a lot of cases. It made me appreciate what George Lucas does visually in his movies even if his directing and script writing seem pretty weak.
And that's enough for now. I'll be back at it on Thursday when football starts. Philly Philly.
