How Many Ways to Die in Red Dead II

Xbox One was offline for some unknown reason. That turned out to be a good thing because I got some serious time with Red Dead Redemption II on PS4. I did so many different things in such a short time in this game, I don't know where to start, but I'll try.

I feel like I've experienced true freedom in a game for the first time. Almost nothing was impossible to do in this game. If you could see it, it could be used or visited. I saw a canoe on a lake and jumped in and paddled across watching hawks and ducks. I saw a row boat at a pier and rowed out to a steamboat way out on a wide river. i bought tickets to a magic lantern show and watched it. Saved a man by bringing him to a doctor and then watched in first-person as he got his arm sawed off. I stole a ride on a train and a street car. I met a guy in Annaberg, the coal mining town, who had a book I read about the abuses of science that predicted the future. It was very funny and very true. I think I'd follow this guy in real life if he existed. There's more but that's enough for now.

I tried to be nice but sometimes I made some mistakes and ended up in a gun fight with cops that didn't end well. I ran over a pedestrian with my horse by accident and got chased until my horse got shot and them me in a lumber yard. I stole a train just for fun, not hurting anyone too much, but the cops on board didn't like that, and I was hunted like an animal until I was dead. I took on a bear, and lost, a crocodile and lost, a deer, a rabbit, and a wolf pack. . . well, I won those. I looked at a sherif the wrong way and got chased to the edge of town, where I was shot. I thought the "defuse" option meant talking the guy down, but he drew a gun on me. What the? There's lots of ways to get killed in this game.

Some other stuff:

I did a bunch of fist fighting and won all those, at least.

I played Dominos with a bunch of strangers at a lonely train station in the middle of nowhere. I won that.

I saved a bunch of poeple I randomly met who had problems. I'm a nice guy, generally. If you're down and out, I'll throw you on my horse and take you where you need to go.

I made camp and crafted coffee and drank it. I skinned a deer and a rabbit.

Look around, the detail in these towns from small, to industrial, to city-like is astounding. So many NPCs too. It's a very living breathing world.

I think I've experienced a game that transcends all other games. Or, it does everything you wished other games could do, and I've only played about 8 to 10 hours of it. I've barely scratched the surface. I feel like I've done a dozen things that haven't been done better in any other game already.

My favorite Wild West game is Gun.Smoke, a Capcom shooter for NES and arcade (I like the NES version better, though).  Actually, Gun.Smoke has a small relation to the Red Dead games, in a way.

I'm glad you won the fight with the rabbit.  Would've been sad if you lost.

Right now I'm reviewing a game called Heavy Burger.  Look it up, it's freakin' awesome!

Gun.Smoke. A vertically scrolling shooter. I'm sure I've played it on some Capcom collection before. Funny to think of comparing it to Red Dead. Holy cow, Gun.Smoke could be like one of the character's dream like what happened in Wolfenstein.

When I threw the rabbit over my shoulder, I was surprised how big it was. Tough to target though with my bow.

Heavy Burger makes me think of Robotron 2084 but as a multiplayer arena shooter. Neat.

Sounds great. Sounds a little too open world for my tastes though. I really don't wish games let me do anything in them anymore. I want to know how much I've progressed and actually finish these fuckin' things. Bring back levels!

I say that, but I really do want to play it at some point. I'm just not letting my wallet take that hit until I have played the first one.

actually, you can play it more linearly too. I've mostly been doing missions with the occasional side trip. There's definitely a lot of opportunities to do your own thing. I still feel like I'm learning how to play though.

See, but then I'm just going to pass by some open world thing and feel I'm missing out. I know you CAN play these games that way, but it just puts me in a different headspace I tend not to like these days.

I totally get the need to complete things, but you will never complete Red Dead II. I honestly thought for a second, "I really don't need any other game, ever.". It's like a bunch of different games put into one. I looked online for the briefest moment while looking for the text to that book I found in the game and saw glimpses of a ton of other things I didn't even think about. Also, I talked to my friend at work about it and he told me some gameplay stuff I didn't know. Like, you can avoid a fire fight with the cops if you holster your gun and hold your hands up. Also, you can talk to every NPC in the game and get responses from them. I though it was just a few that were marked on my mini map.

You stole a train??? Wow. I haven't been exploring as much as you have, been mostly playing the missions, but I'm still only on chapter two, and I have occasionally gotten drawn into side things. A funny thing happened yesterday as I came across some robbers taking a stage coach, and I killed them but also accidentally trampled the victim with my horse. Oops.

Overall, I'm really really impressed with it, and am loving it so far.

I was following the missions up to a point but then realized I had only a few hours left before I had to return it to the library (some else had a hold on it), so I went crazy and took train rides, rowed a boat way out on a river and did as much crazy stuff as I could think of, totally forgetting about the story. Ha! It was fun.
