Mortal Engines and Minecraft

I saw Mortal Engines last weekend and today Mark and I tackled Minecraft's newest achievements having to do with the panda and scaffolding.

Moratal Engines was ok. It's a post apocalyptic world, and they don't really explain very much of it. It's based on a book. I imagine that would fill in the details. The movie is sort of steam punky. Humanity is back to 19th century tech for the most part but they are finding remnants of tech from the past age which is beyond our current technology in the 21st century. I didn't like the ending much. I'm beginning to dislike socio/political statements in movies. Does every scifi or fantasy flick have to comment on our present day? Please don't. I'm tired of it.

But, I liked this character called The Resurrected. He's absolutely terrifying but also truely sad as well. No spoilers, but he's the best character in the movie. I'd say rent it. No need to spend big bucks for the special treatment.

Minecraft has three new achievements. One for the feral cats, one for the pandas, and one for scaffolding, which is related because it's made of bamboo, a key ingredient for the panda achievement.

First, I had to feed some feral cats in a village to tame them. Then I had to let them follow me back to my house and go to sleep. Overnight they sometimes drop items, and that's what unlocks the achievement. I had to tame several cats and sleep a couple of nights to get it.

Second, we had a devil of a time finding a Jungle biome to get bamboo for the scaffolding. We tried seed worlds to no avail. Then we just lucked out on a random seed and found one. But there wasn't any bamboo growing there, strangely enough. Mark found out, though, that the pandas we found there drop bamboo when killed. It wasn't something he wanted to do, but we had no other choice. With one bamboo stalk we were able to grow a bunch more and make the scaffolding.

This scaffolding, for the achievement, has to be 256 blocks high and reach the upper limit of the world. Mark spent a lot of time doing that while I searched for more pandas. I found two and penned them in for later. Then I went to help Mark with the scaffolding.

We got it all the way up there, but the achievement only unlocked for me. We couldn't figure out why. So we packed it all up and took it to where the pandas were. It was a long journey. Mark had earlier gone in search of a village and eventually found one, but it was 6000 blocks away from the jungle and the pandas. That takes almost a half hour to walk in real time. Crazy, but we did it.

At the pen with the pandas, we tried to figure out how to feed them so they would mate. That's the third achievement. We ran out of time, but tomorrow we'll get it done.

I'll probably wait until Netflix for Mortal Engines, but part of the premise reminds me of one of my top five favorite games of all time: Final Fantasy 6.  In that game, there is a castle in the middle of the desert.  It looks just like an ordinary castle, but at one point it turns into a giant machine that can dig through the sand and move to different areas.  That blew my mind when I first saw it in the game.  Man that game was good!

I've seen three movies so far this winter: The Grinch, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and the Spider Man cartoon.  And I also did Ralph Breaks VR.  I'll talk about them when I do my winter movie blog, which probably won't be until February when all the winter movies I want to see are out.

Good choice. See it on Netflix.

Ralph Breaks VR sounds interesting.

Apparently, Mortal Engines as a movie was heavily inspired by Mad Max: Fury Road.

I guess I can see that. I want more vehicle mayhem though. A city on tracks is fine but there needs to be lots more racing around. Oh, and a guy with a guitar chained to a car made out of speaker cabinets. Yeah!

My brother saw that movie Friday night. He liked it but said the cities and effects were more interesting than the characters. Glad I stayed home.

Yea, no one's really memorable except the one character who is barely human, the resurrected. That's not good.
