Finished Another Drout Lecture

This one is called "Way with Words: Writing, Rhetoric and the Art of Persuasion". It's the first in a four part series. I heard all four now and hungry for more.

This lecture on Writing and Rhetoric by Prof. Drout was really interesting but I was a little bit disappointed because it was more about giving speeches than writing.

I started following Prof. Drout on Twitter along with another Prof. I liked from another lecture series. Yea, following teachers. That's how I want my Twitter to go. I was a little surprised they didn't have more followers. Maybe I'll actually talk to him sometime.

I don't know how these people do it, teaching that is. Prof. Drout is clearly an exceptional communicator, funny, engaging and very fluent in all the knowledge he is conveying. I'd love to be a teacher myself, but geeze, what skills you have to have. It's only something I can dream about right now.

I was a professor for a short time and I'm on Twitter, so you can follow me Laughing ... yeah, that wouldn't be the same since I was an adjunct and mostly iterating on other peoples' syllabi, but y'know ... technically. lol

Also, I hate to say this, but you need to have skills and knowledge to be a GOOD teacher, but not having those things doesn't always necessarily bar you from doing it. I've been on both ends of that spectrum, since my teaching improved A LOT in the 2.5 years I did it. I'd say I got fairly good at it, but there was only up to go after semester #1.

I think I'll follow this Drout guy myself though. Maybe Twitter will become bearable if I follow mainly educational accounts ... that's a really good idea, actually.

I think I am following you, @joemikestep right?

I think it's, yet again, another case of me comparing myself to the best of the best and getting down on myself. Prof. Drout is my age but has been teaching for probably 20 years now. I'm just very shy in public. I've been dropping classes if they have too much class presentation stuff in them. Bad. Maybe I can get over it, but it's a tough challenge for me.

I'm trying to find ways to use Twitter more. Casual chat is not that appealing to me. I followed some career related things and professors. Don't know what'll come of it, but whatever.

Ok, now I feel bad, cause I'll definitely follow you, but don't see you on my followers or following list unless your Twitter name is different? I don't see a Knight Driver in either list and I'm not sure the Knight Drivers I find on there are you, cause one guy is from London and the other is an Uber driver, and ... I don't think either are you?

I feel a little bad about making my students present twice in my social media class, but given I was teaching Mass Communication courses and there was no way to stay up-to-date without some input from everyone ...

I'm trying to use social media less in general, and Twitter has always been the least fun and interesting platform to me, but people love it. I don't really get it, but I guess that ends up being a good thing when I don't use it much.

I'm @JERandolph on Twitter. I wish I could change my username here at Pixlbit. I've been wanting to for a while. If I make a new account, probably no one will know, so I don't do it.

I am severly scared of public speaking. In my lecture series Drout said it was the number one fear people had. I thought it was going to the dentist, but ok, I'll believe him. It's weird too because for a time I was performing music and didn't think twice about it. Ah, meds. I'm not going back on them though. I've been considering some kind of anti anxiety herb. . . a legal herb that is. I'm in PA not Colorado. ha ha

I found I didn't tweet that much but I kept the account. Then I was told in a LinkedIn workshop that it was good to be on social media because employers see that you know about current technology. So I've been trying to find a use for it.

I'm following you now. And I know it's you, cause the first thing I see is a Halo book review. lol Also, Nick changed my name without much fuss a couple years or so ago, and I think the community is small enough people would still know it's you, especially if you keep the same picture.

Man, marijuana has its drawbacks once legalized; I don't want people smoking that shit next to me on the beach like people in CO and WA and some other places report. BUT it certainly helped me with anxiety. Meds are ok for me, as I've found Wellbutrin works, but if I were able to get some non-smoked marijuana (lung safety and such) for my anxiety, I might do it. I'm pretty calm for the most part, but there have been situations where I feel just fine about a speech and that right as I step up to give it, BAM. Physical anxiety.

I hate that about social media. It's so mentally destructive, but employers have up and decided you're more useful for knowing how to use it. If my job weren't tied to it, I'd maybe even give it up completely. There are so many drawbacks for the individual.

A friend of mine is way into snuff. Can you snuff weed? ha ha. I'm not interested, but I am going to look into herbs and vitamin suppliments.

If I change my name, I'm changing my picture too. I've got to not associate it with changing things like employment. But, I don't know. I suppose it's wise to just keep it as it is.

Message Nick about changing your name. He’s cool about it.

I want to teach video game history.  "All right class, for tonight's homework, I want you to write an essay on The Tower of Druaga and its similarities with one of the oldest pieces of Sumerian literature: The Epic of Gilgamesh."

That would be awesome. Can I take the class?

Sure.  You've got your first homework assignment already. :)

Following profs on Twitter is a hell of a lot better than some of the accounts that currently have a ton of followers but don't really put anything interesting out in the world.

Well, I'm looking to see if they tweet anything. They may not use it much, which would be disappointing. They should do like Neil deGrasse Tyson and tweet a single thing of interest every day.
