Lush Grasslands. No More Auto-Battle

They didn’t have a quest for me, so I just took off to the islands to explore. I found a soldier’s campsite and the Lush Grasslands. By the time I got back, I was given a new quest.

cutterI mapped out all of level 1 of the Lush Grasslands. I was introduced to gathering sites where you can collect materials and FOEs. These are bigger monsters that roam the map screen. You can avoid them or attack. I avoided at first but then got attacked when I went to gather materials. I found that I could handle these Cutters. They are giant bears. They have a lot of HP and do damage to the whole party. No problem, total picnic. Well, I am on picnic difficulty.

In this battle I finally decided to stop doing auto-battle. Auto-battle gets boring because it only does melee attacks, no spells or specials. I wanted to use some TP and use skills, so I did. Much cooler. Eventually I have to use them anyway because to get certain drops from monsters you have to defeat them with certain types of attacks. There’s a guy in the bar who tells you about them from time to time. Now I just have to remember which monster gets what.

I heard some speculation today on GameInformer’s podcast that this is probably the last 3DS Etrian Odyssey. The next one will be on Switch. Well, I hope I have a Switch when that comes out.

I've heard that, too, about it being the last 3DS Etrian Odyssey and that makes sense. Nexus is, like, a celebration of the series, right? I wonder what they'll do about the map on the Switch. That's always been such an integral part of the series.

Now you mention it, I forgot the Switch isn't really like the Wii-U where you can play both on the pad and on the big screen, or can you? You need that second screen for the map making. Maybe they'll change the design of it.

I wonder what the last 3DS game period will be; now I think of it, have they even stopped officially making DS games? *Looks it up* 2012-2014, apparently is when they stopped? I wonder how long 3DS will keep going.

It seems like it's only Japanese games on it now. You don't have the movie licenced games or 3DS versions of consoles games anymore.

According to wiki, Nintendo is commited to supporting it in the future and even a successor in the works.

Ive been wanting to play this series. Is it easy to jump into in any of the games or should I try to find some of the older released games?

All the ones on 3DS are great because they have easier modes in them. They also have a newer user interface that's beautiful and super easy to navigate. As for story, I haven't really been following it that closely, but I don't think there's any need to play them in sequence. Since you create your own characters, you don't really follow a particular hero.

yeah I've been telling myself to wait for the Switch version... but this one looks good!

I don't know what they are going to do on Switch. I guess it might be Etrian Odyssey VI?

This sounds like a cool game, but if the next game will be on the Switch, I wonder if they will do a sort of split screen witht he map or treat it like GTA with a little map in the corner of the screen.

Seems like the 3DS maps are made for using the stylus. I don't know what they're going to do with the Switch. Is the Switch's screen a touch screen?

Yeah it's a touch screen, but I'm so used to using buttons to navigate that I rarely use this feature.

I bet they just do auto mapping. I think you can automate the mapping in the 3DS game but I haven't discovered where the setting is for that yet.
