Uncharted 3 and Bastion

I finished Uncharted 3 today and started Bastion both on PS4. I also set up my PS3 and made it active again.

Uncharted 3: In finally finished it. It seemed longer than my 8 hour limit I set for myself with games recently. I'm amazed at the wealth of graphical real estate this game provides. It's one great environment after another. I can't imagine how much work and number of people that went in to it. I felt like I was given much more than I expected from a game.

A silly thing I noticed was how many times somebody was saved by a one-hand grab. A drinking game based on that would definitely knock you out. Also the number of times Nathan falls through a rooftop and things break when he tries to climb them. It's like everything hangs by a thread. It's blockbuster movie stunts to the extreme. I also thought about the kind of arm and hand strength someone would need to do all the climbing Nathan does. He much have the strength of five olympically trained orangutans. So there were lots of moments that threatened to break my willing suspension of disbelief.

And there were a few moments that made me yell in frustration. The last segment where you escape the sinking ship baffled me, and I must've replayed it a dozen times before getting it right. And also firefights late in the game against enemies in battle armor. Those guys are epic bullet sponges. Even with me delivering an epic amount of headshots, they still kept coming. Also, the general AI and design of the fights bothered me. You are given a lot of places for cover but you can not play strategically. If you stay there you will be bombarded by grenades and flanked very quickly by suicidal foes who rush you. You can take cover, throw back a grenade or two and move quickly to another location or you will die. So this is a cover-shooter but you have to keep moving. I had the worst time in a particular courtyard until I realized that the best thing to do was run right up on an enemy and unload two dozen rounds into him, then move on to the next. When I took cover and tried and use a rocket launcher and sniper rifle, I failed repeatedly. So I learned to shoot quickly and switch positions frequently, which I don't like much. But I beat the game on normal difficulty, so I'm happy about that. And I thank the developers for putting in loads of checkpoints. Die and you can pick up almost right where you left off and try it again.

Bastion: I saw this was on sale on PS4 for $3.75, so I jumped for it and started playing a bit before the day was over. I'm liking it alot. The narrator comments on what you do, adding it to the overall story, which is neat. It's an action rpg that, so far, is really fun. I hope to get into it more next week.

PS3: I set up my PS3 again so I can sample from games across all Sony systems. There are PS2 games to download on PS4 and PS1 games on PS3. I just wish I could play some of my physical PS2 games on one of those systems. I don't really have space for my PS2 console at the moment. There are only 3 shelves in my TV table and the third shelf is my Xbox One.

So, that's ends my week in gaming. I'm still figuring out where to put my Ninendo systems at home. I got a free TV for them the other day, so I'm set. I just need to requisition the space. I can't wait to have Wii-U and GameCube all hooked up. I will be able to sample from Wii-U, Wii, NGC, GBA, GBC and GB games. That's a lot.

I like Bastion. I never finished it though. Interesting game.

My PS3 disc drive broke, and it has a very small hard drive so it's basically useless.

It's supposed to be a pretty short game, which is why I was looking for it. I've always wanted to play it though.

That's bad. I have the gigantic 20GB console. I wish I still had the super slim version I used to have with its 250GB drive. Then I could put my PS2 next to it on the shelf.

Your description of Uncharted reminds me of the newest Tomb Raider movie.  The lady who played Lara Croft in that movie must've ate her spinach because she was climbing up a airplane that was falling down a waterfall with just one arm.  It was a bit ridiculous.  But it's just a movie.

Right, and I was saying to myself during Uncharted, it's just a video game. It makes sense that you'd see something similar in a movie. Clearly, Uncharted borrowed a lot of movie techniques for their game.
