80s Games I Played Later: Game & Watch

I’ve never played the original handheld versions of these games, but I played them on the Game & Watch Gallery collection I downloaded on 3DS. I was surprised at how good they were. They looked so minimal in design, I thought I’d play them five minutes and be done, but I was hooked on several of them trying to get the highest score. I wish I’d picked one up back in the 80s.

You know, even though Nintendo and everyone else says that Game & Watch was super popular back in the day, I don't remember seeing them at all in the early 80s.  The first time I saw Game & Watches were AFTER the NES came out.  And then I only remember seeing like, four of them.  I remember a Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Zelda, and a Mickey Mouse one.  And that's it.  I just don't think stores in my area carried them back in the early part of the 80s. Really the ones I remember more were the Coleco mini arcade cabinets (I had the Pac-Man one), and the Tiger Electronics LCD games.

But yeah, the Game & Watch Gallery titles they did later are REALLY good.  I wish they still made them.  It's neat that TOSE made them for Nintendo, they're a neat company that has done a lot of games in the background.  Look them up.  One thing I don't like about WarioWare is that after the first WarioWare game was made, they kind of stopped making the Game & Watch Galleries, as WarioWare is just Game & Watch on crack.

Those Coleco mini arcades are pretty neat. I do remember those.

WarioWare really has done a great job with mini-games.

I had the Balloon Fight G&W. It played like the "Balloon Trip" mode in the NES game. It honestly was one of the better of those LCD games they had back then. I had a bunch of Radio Shack's LCD games. Never was interested in the Tiger LCD games, in part because just as they started getting really popular, I got my first Game Boy.

I think I had one of those Tiger LCD games. I didn't think they were very good.

I had a Game and Watch handheld. I remember Snoopy was in it and I think you threw apples. That was the beginning of my handheld games. I went from that to a Radio Shack racing game, to those white Tiger Handhelds, to eventually Game Gear, Gameboy. Those Game and Watch games should be brought back to iOS/Android.

They should. They are perfect for phones.

I had some LED handheld systems early on, but then I didn't get another handheld until the DS. My friend got an Atari Lynx and Game Gear before that, but I wasn't that interested at the time.

Loved the Game Gear but damn that thing could eat batteries. Thank goodness for battery packs.

That and the Atari Lynx took a lot of batteries and used them up pretty quickly. I hardly have to think about it much with a DS or 3DS. It's great.
