Death, Death, Crash and More Death

This week’s gaming included two long deathful sessions with Witcher III and Minecraft, then a crashing demo and a deathful indie game.

Witcher III: Restarted on Story mode. I got to the next war torn location. Then I took a side quest I probably shouldn’t have and got stuck being one-hit killed by a giant spider. I love the way these missions unfold in the game. You investigate tracks with your special tracker vision, find evidence of whatever you are looking for, and then fight it out with either natural or supernatural beasts. But I didn’t pay attention to those little red markers that tell you when a mission or enemy is too tough. Story mode makes you think you can conquer anything.  Ah well. I’m stopping for now. I don’t like getting deep into a mission just to be one-hit killed by a boss.

Minecraft:  I managed to rack up quite a few more emeralds. I have 510 out of 1000 now. I got most of them when I joined Mark’s game. He was in a town with a slew of villagers of various professions. I leveled several of them up to level 3 and acquired many emeralds in the process. I had to harvest or mine for a large variety of materials. I got clay and stone for the stone mason; coal and iron for the armorer; carrots and beats for the farmers; paper for the librarian; raw pork and beef for the butcher; leather for the leather worker; and rotten meat for the priest.

Things were going great until we both got the enchantment table built. I made myself a powerful sword and decided my trading days were over. Time to fight. I conquered the Fortress in the Nether and when I came back to the town, there was a party of marauders. I beat them to a pulp and took their banner. That started the real raid and soon Mark and I were fighting for our lives against several waves of crossbow wielding soldiers, enchanters and a giant war beast. We beat down two waves. I got on an armored horse and went after the last wave. Somehow, these horses don’t give you any real protection, only making it harder for you to hit anything from horseback. So, I got killed. I was kind of burnt out on Minecraft anyway.

Wreckfest: I played the free trial. This is by Bugbear, the guys who make the Flatout series of destruction derby and combat racing games. It wasn’t too bad. It strongly reminded me of Destruction Derby 2 from way back on PSone. You have arenas and circuit races in stock cars. You have an indicator to tell you what part of your car has been damaged the most. It’s cool. Controls are pretty good. Sometimes the Flatout games would get a little bit floaty in the controls but these were fairly tight. I liked it and will buy it someday when it hits a sale.

Children of Morta: I really wanted to like this isometric action RPG. It looks gorgeous in a retro but more detailed sort of way. Thing is, when I chose an archer to play after the first level, I got my ass handed to me. I couldn’t keep the enemies off me long enough to kill them. I ended up running for the exit but didn’t make it. Seriously, if I can’t play as an archer, I’m out.

That’s a week. I’m off for MLK day this Monday, so I think I’ll get some game time in. I’ve got a whole new approach to game choice I just devised today, so change is afoot.

I've been able to repopulate my village to 5 now. I had to boat to another landmass and bring two villagers back one by one, and set up pistons activiated by switches to get them up into the village. But then I killed 3 Illagers that somehow got into town, which kicked off an instant raid. I didn't die this time, but I kept leaving the village to heal up from taking damage from the warbeast that was on my ass, and I guess I went too far away and it counted it as a failure. Both villagers were no more, so I had to go back and scoop up two more from across the ocean. Then it took a while to breed the first two. Threw tons of food at them and even walled them in together at one point.

Moral of the story: dont kill Pillage leaders. And if you do, make sure you have a bow and plenty of arrows with you in town to use against the warbeast.

Oh man, I know what you are going through. I lucked out the other day because only one Illager showed up. Mark killed him but it didn't trigger a raid. Last week though, we went through several raids. Hilarious and awesome except that I died in one of them. The other one we won and from then on we got a discount on all trades. Pretty sweet.

I figured out the villager problem the other day. Just build more beds and then build the craft tables for the craftsmen you want. They start showing up the next day. The key is the beds. You just need more of them then there are villagers. Next time I'm on, I'm going to see how many villagers I can bring into town.

Giant War Beast would be a great metal band name.
