I made some serious progress on Minecraft's 1000 Emeralds achievement the other day. I broke my own record and now the end is in sight. Here’s how it went.

Mark loaded up the Stronghold Village seed on Xbox One and we got to work on the traders. Strangely this time, there were few villagers, just a few farmers and leather workers. They didn’t seem to want to increase their numbers either even though I built beds and more crafting tables. It was strange. My hypothesis (which I made later on) was that in addition to making more beds, you also have to trade with whomever is there. This makes them happy and start to procreate. But I’m not sure. All I know is that it was taking too long, so we respawned the whole world.

This time there were several more villagers in addition to the usual farmers and leather workers. There was a stone mason, armorer and butcher. Seeing the stone mason made me get right to work. I leveled him up very quickly so I could trade four different materials with him. I would go gather them all, and in a day or so, return and trade it all for emeralds. Rinse and repeat. I calculate I made 170 emeralds in the play session, a new personal record. I increased my percentage from 68 percent complete to 85 – only 150 emeralds to go!

Then, in the last few minutes of the session, we burnt the village to the ground like marauding Vikings. I watched the town burn from a nearby hill while Mark chased down all the villagers. Sick, right? Hey, grinding is tough and builds a lot of tension and resentment. It’s bound to release sometime.

1000 emeralds is a lot of trading!

How much enchanting is good enough to face the ender dragon? Should I enhanct entire diamond armor set to max? What's the minimum I can get away with?

1000 is a lot. I had given up on it after a couple hundred a few months ago, but then I stumbled upon how to gain more villagers and now I'm racing to the finish.

If I remember right, Mark and I would go in with diamond swords, bows and iron armor, all enchanted to the max. First though, you need a bow, hopefully with Infinity on it so you don't need a lot of arrows. That's the first part of the end dragon battle, destroying its ability to reheal. Then we just had whatever we could enchant on the swords like Flame or Smite and Blast Protection on the armor. There are some potions that can help a lot too like the one that gives you temporary health regen. I always liked making the fire protection potion, but that was more for enemies in the nether. If I remember right, the End Dragon breathes it's own type of damaging breath which you can bottle and make a potion out of (the type of potion I forget now). But mainly you just have to be able to dish out more damage and take more damage. There are a lot of endermen in there too which can be a problem. It's a badass fight. We used to do it over and over again because it was fun, but it's a pain getting all the ender pearls together in the real world to open the end portal. I want to do it again though.

Can I just say that Minecraft is insane?

I hear there is a AR game coming called Minecraft Earth. When i heard the words "Minecraft Earth" I got excited because I thought they had rendered the whole earth and all it's towns and cities in a Minecraft seed file. But no, it's just AR.
