Listomaniac

I just can’t stop. I’ve got 49 games in my all-time list to build my library from, and I go another page on Metacritic to get more. What’s up with that? It's listomania. I think I’ll stop at games with a score of 90 and then search some other lists to get older games. This current list includes games rated at 91, so I’m almost done.

I should mention that I picked up a few more games last weekend from the overall list: The Bioshock Collection (XBO), Bloodborne (PS4), Fallout 3 GotY Edition (X360), Uncharted 4 (PS4), and Mass Effect 3 (X360).

Here are the additions, numbers 50-76.

50. Advance Wars (GBA)
51. Vagrant Story (PS)
52. Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
53. Batman Arkham Asylum (X360)
54. Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS)
55. Age of Empires II: Age of Kings (PC)
56. Final Fantasy X (PS2)
57. Final Fantasy VII (PS)
58. Chrono Trigger (PS)
59. Bayonetta 2 (Switch)
60. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
61. ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3)
62. Rayman Origins (Wii)
63. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes (GC)
64. Metroid Fusion (GBA)
65. Final Fantasy VI Advance (GBA)
66. Dark Souls II (X360)
67. Dishonored (PC)
68. Little Big Planet 2 (PS3)
69. Guitar Hero (PS2)
70. Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii)
71. Baldur's Gate (PC)
72. Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil (PS2)
73. Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal (PS2)
74. Assassin's Creed II (PS3)
75. Spyro Year of the Dragon (PS)
76. Forza Horizon 3 (XONE)

Some notes:

Vagrant Story I believe I had downloaded on PS3 years ago and maybe even played part of it. I’ll have to go check.

Age of Empires II I’ve played on DS. I don’t plan on getting a modern PC to play it again, but I’ll play the DS version again. It's great, and I still have it.

All those Final Fantasy’s might show up on Game Pass soon except VI. In any case, I still have X and XII on PS2.

Sheesh, I'll need another 3DS for Fire Emblem. Well, if my recent rare game sale goes through, I can pick one up again. Maybe a VIta too for Persona 4 Golden. I ask myself, why do I trade stuff?

Most of the rest I own either digitally or physically. I’d like to have a copy at home on a legacy system and one on a current gen system I play at Mark’s place. In rebooting my Xbox 360, I’m glad to see it remembers all my digital purchases, so I may not need physical copies of some of these at all. It’s kind of neat to be able to play a particular game at home and at Mark’s from a digital file with the same save stored on the cloud. It is how everything is going to work soon anyhow with streaming services. I’m getting a little taste of it now, and it’s pretty nice. I don’t really want to subscribe to PS Now though. It seems some legacy titles are only playable through that service and not actually purchasable digitally on PS4, like the original God of War. I’m not thrilled with that, but I may subscribe for a month when the time comes.

Klonoa 2 is an interesting game. I wonder if it's still in my collection?

The problem with trying to build a library based on aggregate scores is that something might be objectively good but it just does not click with you. Telltale's Walking Dead game is universally loved but when I started playing it I did not enjoy it at all. Way too stressful. Wrong kind of stress for me to enjoy playing it (for example). But also some games with serious problems can really resonate with you even if it doesn't review well. Some people love the "Tales of" series but I doubt any of those games crack the top 10%. I love the idea of having a physical library of games but it really needs to be tailored to what you know you like (and I'm sure you have a good idea about that by now), not by what the internet has come to agree is the best. That's my 2 cents anyway.

I agree. I'd say a lot of my favorites are in the 70s on Metacritic. Probably this list is stupid, but it has been fun to look at.

I've never gotten very far in Vagrant Story, or Chronotrigger. I know this is a mistake I need to correct. One of these days....

I've come very close to purchasing Chrono Trigger many times but never, um, pulled the trigger.

I remember for a short time Ico was a must have game on the PS2, I found a copy but I just didn’t like it. It’ll probably be one of those games that if I played it today I would probably like it. I do like Klonia 2 as well as Guitar Hero. I have a soft spot for PS2.

I've been real close to getting the ICO/Shadow Colossus Collection for PS3. It's still like $15 which is a little high for an old game, in my opinion.
