Finished Gears 5

I finished the campaign in Gears 5 today.

I got hooked good and even started following the story and caring a bit for the characters. What an ocean of resources were put into this game. There are a lot of different locations, weather and battles galore.

I wonder sometimes at the effort that goes into a game like this. All those man hours for a piece of entertainment that will last a year or so and then be largely forgotten. They make their money back though, I guess that's enough, but I think if I was working on such a project, I'd like it to mean a little more in the long run. There is a lot of art put into a game like this but will it be widely seen and over a long period of time, like an El Greco. Time will tell, but I feel like the medium is not well suited to longevity and a very wide population. Systems change every 5 to 10 years and the game becomes less easily played. Gamers may be a larger segment of society now, but the majority will not even know what Gears is. I mean, I'd be fine with a shorter game, less story without those lavish cut scenes, and more focus on gameplay, I don't need as much game as there is in Gears 5, which is a lot. I think the story took me a dozen hours to finish on Beginner mode. I found 75% of the collectibles on a first run, which is pretty good. I don't think I'll go back to get them all but I am going to try some Hoard mode next time. Mark doesn't have the game though, so it won't be as fun, and I'll probably play a handful of levels with randoms and quit. It's fine. I enjoyed it.

I've got to make room on my hard drive for Game Pass Quest games since there is a new list of weekly and monthly quests. I've got to get Halo 5 on there at 100GB. It'll take two days to install, and I can't do it right now because my drive is at 92% and I don't want to remove anything except Gears 5 when I'm finished with it. So I may not get to the Halo 5 quest, but I'm going to try. I've already got over 1000 points. I may end up with $10 earned this month if I keep at it.

Well, that's a day. More tomorrow in all likelihood. Stay safe.

Games have a longer shelf life now with re releases and remasters and whatnot. We're still playing super Mario world and mass effect and old final fantasy games. If a game is good, it can last forever. Smile

I hope so. They just need to make good emulators or rerelease mini systems.

At some point I really want to give Gears another go, and maybe take my time going through the series.

I like to think more and more games will get played over again because many are being re-released on newer consoles. Some of us folks will still probably have the originals in a closet, dust them off and give them a spin.

Can you install games on an external hard drive on the 360? That could be an option for you if you don't want to remove games from the hard drive.

I got into Gears with Gears 3 and then went back and played 1 and 2. Mark and I played hoard mode in 3 a lot.

I guess I'm thinking about works of art that have lasted for hundreds of years, even thousands. Is Gears going to be playable in 2600? Not that I'm going to know about it.

For Xbox One yes, and I'm considering it. Xbox 360, I think so, but I never tried it. I know you can store games there but I'm not sure about running them from the external hard drive. I would assume so, but I haven't tried it.

I was tempted to cut and run because I had other Game Pass quests to do, but I got sucked in and had to finish it.

I haven't played a Gears campaign since 3. It's not like I don't recognize that these are well-made games and interesting narratives on their own but the main draw for me these past 2 years have been the Horde mode, which I only play with friends. The same thing occurred with Halo; past Halo 4, I haven't cared.

I'd highly recommend, as others have, that you get an external hard drive. I got a good deal on a 2 TB but now I'm less than 700 GBs left.

I haven't enjoyed the Gears stories since 3 but I still love the gameplay, especially hoard mode, but I can't get my friend Mark to play hoard with me anymore, so I kind of play a round or two with randos and stop.

I am so tempted to get an external hard drive. Reinstalling stuff is so time consuming.
