Nothing But NES

And Game Boy. I put all my current gen consoles away, stopped my subscriptions, and went full on retronaut. I got my Hyperkin 3 and Game Boy Player set up. I'm playing nothing but NES and Game Boy the rest of the month. Here's a pic of my rig now.

Today i played Gauntlet II on NES. I like this version. It has the voices, unlike Gauntlet I for NES, and it seems to be a little bit easier. I lasted a good long time through many levels before my health ran out and that was only because I picked up a teleporter skill that, for some unknown reason, made it impossible for me to pick up items. Whenever I got next to one, I teleported past it instead of picking it up. I finally escaped that level but my health had gotten too low to survive much longer.

Then i played Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord a very long time. My crew never even got past the second level in the dungeon in all that time. Level 2 is all about getting poisoned and if you don't have the cleric spell to counteract it, you're basically screwed. That spell appears when you are a level 7 cleric. I made the mistake of trying level 2 a few times and lost several characters. I rolled up new ones to fill the party out until I had the money to raise them back. I got most of them back but then I got paralyzed by zombies and ran out of money. So half my original fighters are still incognito.

One met a special sort of fate. He got turned to evil. My party was good, and I always remembered not to fight friendly encounters, but once I hit the button too quickly and fought one. He turned evil, and before I could leave enough friendlies alone to turn him back, he got paralyzed and then poisoned. He died on the way back from a campaign and I could no longer add him to my party, even if I did raise him from the dead. But I'm hoping I can get the rest back sometime. I'm trying to hang in there as long as I can despite the challenges. At least my magic slinging crew has remained untouched. That is cruicial. I have a cleric and a mage I turned into a WIzard so he could identify items and learn both mage and cleric spells. He levels slower though, so it may end up hurting me, but you can't have too many healing spells.

I'm going to play Dragon Quest via a Game Boy cart I have next and I may borrow Final Fantasy from my friend Mark. I also ordered Sky Kid for NES on ebay. I should get that next week to try.

Sky Kid sounds like a failed 90s movie I would enjoy greatly.

It's like a 2D scrolling biplane game, goes right to left. i played it on a Namco collection, the original arcade version. I'm interested to see what the NES version is like.

It almost sounds like Spy Kids, a film I kind of liked.

I had a Gamecube and GB Player, but they got stolen. :( I'd really like to play Mother 3 on my TV.

I never played Wizardry on NES. Instead I played its rival series, Ultima, specificaly Ultima: Exodus which was a NES port of the third game.

I know I tried that game once a long while ago. I'm real tempted to give it another shot. That and the Might and Magic game for Genesis.

I think Tamson was a big Wizardry fan back in the day. I love those types of games, but boy are they hard.

I played a lot of the original Gauntlet on NES when I was a kid.

Yeah, Tamson's way into it. I hope he makes a appearance on this subject.

I seem to be able to manage the first WIzardry game enough to keep at it. Wizardry II frustrated me too much, and I never finished Dragon Warrior for similar reasons.

You cancelled all your subscriptions?

Sky Kid is a good Namco game.  Catchy music, too.  Can you find the Pac-Man cameo?

Yeah, I'm kind of relieved really because I was always chasing rewards points and being flooded with games. I ended up playing a lot of stuff I only liked a little bit. I'll resume it though later on this year, if everything goes well.

I will look for it when I get it in the mail a few days from now.

Even though Sir-Tech went bust shortly after Wizardry 8 released, Japan is keeping the series alive. There was a Wizardry game released on PS3 and Steam a whole back.

Yeah, I have that and the PS2 one too. It went online, but I haven't tried that at all because it's only on PC so far.
