Wizardry and Dragon Warrior

I'm playing both right now. Wizardry on NES via Hyperkin 3 and Dragon Warrior on Game Boy Color via the Gamecube's Game Boy Player.

Wizadry has been giving me fits but I discovered (or rediscoverd) the restart button. If you are about to get party wiped, just hit restart on the console and then select "restart an out party" from the training grounds menu. You'll appear somewhere near, or not, from where you were just before that terrible encounter.

This is not a cure all, as I found out on level 3. I had gotten beat up pretty badly on level four and was struggling to get back through the maze of rooms on level 3 when encounter after encounter happened. I restarted several times but was still lost in the maze with ailing party members. I miraculously chose the right path and got out of there with only one dead. The restart option is really helpful because I was getting nowhere without it. I'd get to level 4 and get party wiped by a sudden encounter I could do nothing about. Now, as long as I hit reset before everyone in party dies, I can make my chances at escape a little better. I'm feeling confident I can beat the game again.

Mark's also playing and is ahead of me, as usual. I'm level 7 and 8 and he's already at 10 and unlocked the lower dungeon levels. I'll get there.

In Dragon Warrior (or Quest) I've gotten farther than ever before. I'm level 10 and digging deep into various cave systems - thus the need for graph paper. I could look them up on my phone like I've been doing with Wizardry, but I got the itch to draw them out, and so I will. I'm feeling good I may be able to finally beat this game, but I'm far from the end of it.

I also unsubscribed and then resubscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate as I moved my console from Mark's place to my own. I don't want to miss those free biweekly games.

Ah, the joys of save-scumming.

I beat the Game Boy Color version of Dragon Quest ! (released in a double-pack with DQII). I downloaded Dragon Quest 1-3 on Switch and am probably about halfway through DQI, and have just gotten to Africa on DQ3. DQ3's world map is based on the real world, and there's even a town in North America that's fighting for its independence from an evil empire, LOL.

I have the I +II cart and a single Game Boy Color cart with III on it. That's cool about III. I can't wait to get to it.

I should look up a world map for DQ1 because I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do next.

My friend and I played Dragon Warrior (and Final Fantasy) at his house on his NES when we were kids.  We would take turns playing while the other one would draw maps or look at ones we had or the beastiary in the instruction booklets.  I enjoyed those games, but not enough to buy them myself.  But that changed once I played FF4 on the SNES!

I excited to get obsessed with old RPGs again. I've played FF4 on DS but never finished it because of that no metal weapons dungeon. What the heck?

The trick is to never sell any of your armor that isn't metal, then you have it when you need it.

Honestly, though, I don't like the DS version of FF4 very much.  It's too hard!  I'd recommend tracking down either the GBA, PSP, or original SNES version instead.

Okay. That sounds good. I like easier.
