Old RPGs

I played some RPGs today on NES, Game Boy and Genesis. I'm still at it, but I'm setting up my Xbox One again alongside the Hyperkin 3 so I can keep up with rewards and some new releases.

Wizardry: I finally beat the foes in the Monster Allocation Center and got the Blue Ribbon that will let me get to levels 5-9. I lost a fighter doing so. I tried to revive him with my cleric's Di spell but I turned him to ashes. The Temple couldn't revive what was left. I rolled up a new fighter and leveled him up double quick. I took some encounters down on level 5. I didn't have to look up the map on my phone because, when I retrieved my graph paper, there were all my wizardry maps. I went down to level 5 a few more times before getting a little tired of the grind for now.

Dragon Warrior: I got to level 12, mapped both caves nearest the castle, and started venturing south west to see what was there. I came across a desert ruins with monsters I wasn't ready for, so I hoofed it back to the castle. Except for this ruins, I'm not sure where to go next. I've been told to search for several different items and find a town that sells keys. I haven't found one item yet and the town that is supposed to have the keys for sale, doesn't. At least that's what a villager told me. So without a specific goal in mind, I sort of put it down for now.

I looked in my collection and found that I have Dragon Warrior/Quest 1-3 on Game Boy Color.

Final Fantasy: I borrowed the NES cart from Mark. I played it in a hot headed way. I got equiped and met the king. He told me the damsel in distress was taken somewhere in the northwest. So I rushed out of the castle and went there. I had one encounter along the way and found a building. I went in and talked so someone who engaged me in battle right away. I think it was the boss of the whole game. I got party wiped and wondered, "what was that all about?". I stopped playing but maybe I'll go back sometime.

Shining in the Darkness: I also borrowed this Genesis cart from Mark. We both played and beat it way back in the 90s, but I wanted to check it out again. I got pulled in pretty good. I started mapping the first level of the labyrinth before getting killed on the doorstep of the exit. There doesn't seem to be much of a penalty. The Valyries picked up my body, and I rematerialized at the Shrine. I didn't have time to go any farther, but I think I'll play more of it tomorrow.

In the first Final Fantasy game, you should walk around the forest surrounding the town, fighting monsters until you get to level 3 or so.  Then you can buy all the good armor and weapons and spells, then go fight Garland in that building.

But whatever you do, don't name your White Mage 'Cary'  My friend did that and he would always name the weakest character in an RPG after me.  Although now I kind of like white mages more, so you can go ahead and name your White Mage after me if you want.  A few years ago I actually had a dream that I was a White Mage in a new Final Fantasy game.  It was a pretty epic dream, too.  I'm surprised my brain thought of it while I was sleeping!

That dream sounds awesome!

It was!  Have you ever had one of those dreams where when you wake up, you think, "I have to write that down!"  Well I did and I even posted it as a blog on 1up.com (yeah it was that long ago).  Maybe I should post it again sometime here at PixlBit?

I'd read it!

Yeah, Garland, that's the bloke. I'll take the advise and get my revenge. I'll beat him/her with a White Mage named Cary too. I assume White Mages are healers but I'm not up on FF character types. What does the Brawler and the Red Mage do anyway?

Jeez. I guess it's tough to resurrect a pile of ashes.

Ultima III: Exodus also had resurrect from ashes. Unless your character was super leveled up it was faster just to say bye-bye to him/her and roll a replacement.

Funny thing was too, I could've taken his armor, weapons and items from his ashes before trying to have him razed, but I didn't and lost them when the clerics in the temple attempted the resurrect. I'm very suspicious of where they went.

You need to go southeast from Tantegel Castle, not southwest. You'll find what you're looking for there.

Dragon Quest II was tough near the end. It got hit with budget and time constraints late in development so a lot of stuff that was supposed to be in the end game, wasnt, leaving you under-leveled.

Dragon Quest III was where Dragon Quest really grew its beard. It's the best RPG on NES, hands down.

I found a cave in the southeast, mapped it and came out in another area where I found a town and the Shrine. Neither helped me much except for some better weapons. Maybe I go even farther southeast?

The key seller is in the town of Rimuldar (the town immediately south of the eastern cave.) You have to go around the outer edge of the town map, outside of the water that surrounds the buildings. You just have to be careful not to go too far or you'll exit to the world map. In the northwestern corner you'll find a doorway into a building where the shopkeeper will sell you keys at 16 gold a pop.

You know, I saw some stuff just outside the town, but I couldn't figure out how to get there. There's a seller just outside the castle too I can't get to. I'll go there again and figure it out. Thanks.
